In his 15-year stint as a fire-safety instructor and city painter, Steven Soto learned that it’s not always enough to paint walls—you may also need to repair them. To do so, he and his fully insured contractors smooth walls with a fast-drying plaster compound. The skim coating is more durable than traditional drywall, and can seamlessly fill in dents incurred during daily wear or home discus competitions. Beyond painting standard walls, Steven’s techs can also add color to nontraditional surfaces such as sheetrock, metal, and wood.

Founded by a duo of devoted globetrotters, Home & Abroad outfits abodes with handcrafted and imported goods from around the world. In December, their award-winning window display refashioned a collection of wrought-iron table lamps ($15–$95) into tiny hot air balloons. Inside, crafty-patterned cotton cushions ($20) conspired with couches to create cozy and inviting spots to thwart their owners' attempts to go jogging or invent cold fusion. Home & Abroad helps fill empty rooms with sturdy, rustic furniture made from sustainable hardwoods and repurposed copies of Walden.

MOD Restoration is the brainchild of Sim Fern and Hanny Lerner, a husband-and-wife team. In addition to dressing furniture in fashionable new ensembles, they keep tabs on their seasoned artisans who work throughout New York and San Francisco. They've made a name for themselves in the world of mid-century modern furniture and love resurrecting pieces by iconic designers, from George Nelson to Hans Wegner. While they work with architects, designers, and the likes of Ivanka Trump, they draw from a vast fabric collection from designers such as Maharam and Kvadrat. They also use these fabrics to make custom drapes for windows.
