Although Mototech's Chris Bond and Robert Mayer are ASE-certified experts in the maintenance of vehicles ranging from flashy Audis to muscular Dodges, their most important innovations are invisible to the naked eye. The co-owners both worked as engineers, but now exercise their knack for invention with product-developing companies, researching and designing chemical degreasers and cleaners with the least environmental impact. Their molecular triumphs grew into the shop's signature line of decontaminants, which they create onsite with environmentally friendly ingredients from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Design for Environment list. During day-to-day operations, knowledge of science empowers them to perform sustainable car modifications, such as converting a motor to run on renewable ethanol or a puppy's boundless love, and to implement a broad program to reduce energy costs and recycle waste such as motor oil.
Bond and Mayer's met as industrial designers at Intelagard, a firefighting-equipment manufacturer, and bonded over their previous careers as mechanics. Missing friendly chats with clients and the impressions of Louise Jefferson wheezed out by jalopies, they quit the firm to open their ASE Blue Seal–recognized garage. Bond contributes specializations in metal fabrication, welding, and machining, and Mayer brings 12 years of expertise as a master mechanic and certification as an L1 advanced engine-performance specialist. They keep their team small to ensure a high quality of work and to welcome clients with familiar faces, and are a participating center in the NAPA AutoCare network, which guarantees parts and labor at any of its locations nationwide.
To call The Body Shop a mere skin and body care store is to miss half of what makes it special. Late founder Dame Anita Roddick was a pioneer for ethical business practices; upon opening her first store in Brighton, England, in 1976, she developed company values such as "Defend Human Rights" and "Protect The Planet." She somehow balanced principles and profit, partnering in global campaigns with UNICEF, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and the United Nations, all while ultimately expanding her brand into 2,500 locations in over 60 international markets. After her death in 2007, then-British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, ?She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market. . . . She was an inspiration.?
Indeed, the Body Shop exhibits an eco-friendliness and social consciousness that's hard to come by in a company of its size. Its products have been fair-trade since 1987, and its Against Animal Testing movement led to an EU-wide ban of animal testing of cosmetics. The products are made from ingredients harvested from around the world: shea butter from Ghana goes into body scrubs and butters, and Indian artisans craft wooden massagers and tote bags that are screenprinted by hand. But all that isn't to say the company's production practices overshadow its final products. Skincare treatments such as the brand?s iconic body butters, facial products, and gift collections often appear in Allure, Marie Claire, Lucky, Seventeen and other national publications.

Rosati?s Pizza's history dates back to the early 1900s, when a recent Italian immigrant named Ferdinand Rosati moved from New York to Chicago with the dream of opening a restaurant. His first attempt was modest?with Ferdinand simultaneously fulfilling the duties of chef, server, dishwasher, and host?but quickly gained popularity for its crispy-thin-crust pizzas, originally served as complimentary appetizers. Encouraged by the public's response to the pies, Ferdinand and his son, Sam, decided to focus their efforts on opening a true pizzeria.
Today, at Rosati's Pizza locations across the country, plumes of heat swirl above piping-hot pies concocted from handmade sauce and dough. A smattering of toppings cling to five crust options?crispy thin, double dough, Chicago-style, pan, and superstuffed?as well as hide from their hungry predators inside hand-rolled calzones. Homemade lasagna and fettuccine alfredo battle for the top pasta spot, and fried chicken, baby back ribs, and fried-shrimp dinners work together to distract diners from hard-to-resist buffalo wings.
