Maine Pines Racquet & Fitness’s members take advantage of the gym’s wide range of amenities, including group fitness classes. On six heated indoor tennis courts, balls whiz back and forth in friendly volleys reminiscent of the childhood game Hot Potato, or as it was known during the potato famine, Hot Clump of Dirt. On the yoga studio’s bamboo floor, patrons strengthen muscles with Yoga Pilates Fusion or get deep stretches during Yin Yang sessions. Guests unwind from their workouts with a sauna session or relax in a bar and lounge equipped with a TV.
The Black Belt instructors at Northern Chi Martial Arts Center not only teach students how to kick and punch, but also how to think like martial artists. Kids as young as 4 years old begin on the path to high kicks and warrior yells, and classes teach all members of the family how to defend themselves and slice open watermelons with their bare hands.
Artist Adria Moynihan brings her creative visions to life as she lavishes canvases with bright daubs of paint and helps students realize their artistic potential during lessons that empower with fun and constructive artistic exploration. As her pupils take brushes or charcoal in hand, Adria helps them unlearn old, constrictive rules or inspires them to add personal, fanciful twists to realistic depictions, such as nestling a grenade among the apples in a fruit bowl. Students can steer their learning toward shading landscapes with pastels or fluttering acrylics and oils over canvases as they get acquainted with color theory, paint mixing, and how to document their work for a digital portfolio. Adria's encouraging style of positive reinforcement and periodic showerings from her watering can ensure that brush wielders of all skill levels blossom and develop their own artistic niche.
The music programming at the nonprofit Maine Academy of Modern Music is designed to allow pupils to rock out to their favorite contemporary jams. During individualized lessons, teachers help students master the basics of rock instruments such as guitar, bass, drums, and more. From there, young rockers can enlist in one of the school's rock bands, where they'll learn to play alongside other musicians as a group. That, in turn, leads to performance opportunities, which the school sets up at renowned Portland venues like Bayside Bowl, Big Easy, Asylum, and the Old Port Festival.
Bands also assemble at the school's rock camps, where attendees not only rehearse originals and covers but also learn rock history and take field trips to local radio stations. Besides its in-house opportunities, the academy's outreach programs also supply local schools with everything from private concerts to master classes to ensure everyone has access to quality music education.
