Tina Guershon oversees the fitness curriculum at FuzeMove Fitness, channeling more than 20 years of dance and performance on the island of Barbados. The majority of her fellow teachers were once former students at FuzeMove, who became enamored with the supportive atmosphere and the slimming effects of their Zumba and Bokwa workouts.
Both party-like group workouts mix dance with aerobic movement to tone muscles and burn calories. Zumba draws from salsa, cumbia, hip hop, and other dance styles to choreograph routines, whereas Bokwa combines basic boxing techniques and Kwaito, an African dance method. Though they might look impressive in action and painted on a velvet canvas, neither of the methods require any prior dance or fitness experience. The fitness studio mixes up their routine with special events, such as bollywood dance workshops or Zumba parties set in a night club setting complete with black lights and glow sticks.

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Our workouts are a progression in fitness. The workouts are challenging but at the clients own pace so as not to discourage a beginner.
Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?
Yes, music definitely sets the mood for a great workout. We look for music that has at least 130 to 150 beats per minute.
Do you run your gym according to a particular exercise philosophy?
You Want Results, Then Train Like It.
Owner and certified fitness trainer, Scott York, leads constantly changing, high-energy boot-camp classes that were featured in Austin Fit Magazine. After stretching and a dynamic movement warm-up, bodies are kept guessing with activities that vary with each class. Participants (no more than 20/class) swing kettlebells, lift free weights, toss medicine balls, and dangle from gymnast rings in a 45- to 60-minute workout session that can burn roughly 500+ calories or the exact amount of nervous energy needed to fail a driver’s test. The early-morning sessions strengthen muscles and minds with positive energy throughout the day, with Scott encouraging exercisers to always work out within their comfort zone. FullForceFitness recommends that clients bring water, tennis shoes, health and consent forms, and a large beach-type towel for floor exercises.

When it comes to fitness, Craig Johnson believes in five basic principles: balance, coordination, cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, and flexibility. This certified personal trainer and medical exercise specialist relies on these simple tenets to create customized fitness programs for anyone who wants to tone up, gain lean muscle, or recover after a surgery or injury. His patience and passion for rehabilitation has made him quite popular with folks who previously thought they were physically unable to work out, including those diagnosed with osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, and chronic skepticism. But regardless of the clients' state of health when they first meet Craig, his primary goal is still to ensure they live longer, happier lives, whether that's accomplished by helping them slim down during Zumba classes or stay motivated during personal training sessions.

Verdant foliage sways in the breeze just outside the floor-to-ceiling windows that ring around the gym. Patrons torch calories and chisel physiques on new equipment, and a variety of classes, massage services, and dietary counseling keeps members relaxed and healthy in and out of the gym. Groups can also mosey outdoors for one-hour group fitness classes that tone muscles under the lush canopy of tree cover shading the deck. Pilates and yoga strengthen and lengthen muscles, and Zumba and Power Dance classes liquidate loitering fat reserves with high-energy cardio workouts set to lively soundtracks.
