The inspiration behind the doggy-sitting business For The Love of Dogs lies, simply, in its name. Its owners always owned and cared for dogs, discussing the shortcomings or successes of other pet-care services. Finally, they decided to do dog-sitting right, so they got their own facility and haven’t stopped having friends over to play since.

The owners outfit their play space with rubber floors—easy on joints young and old—and provide nontoxic toys for the pups to chew on. They watch over canines in owners’ stead from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, even sitting from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. They reward well-mannered visitors with treats from The Barkery, a line of dog treats made from organic ingredients. Each visit includes grooming—a service that the staff offers separately—along with training services and professional waste removal for yards and doghouses due to be rented out to misbehaving spouses.

The zookeepers and storytellers at Tiny Tails to You! travel from town to town to organize pop-up petting zoos four days a week, and lease out hands-on learning experiences for festivals, summer camps, and private parties. What beasts turn up at these parties is up to the customer, who might arrange for anything from an avalanche of fluffy bunnies and baby birds to an encampment of chinchillas, hedgehogs, leopard geckos, and tortoises. The staff's love for animals extends beyond informative show-and-tells—head zookeeper Ed Bradfield offers pet-sitting services for dogs, cats, exotic pets, and house-trained rocks, and the zookeepers are nearly always offering baby bunnies for adoption.

A love of animals and a desire to help them live long, healthy lives drove each of the veterinarians at Central Texas Animal Hospital into the veterinary field. Together, they provide vaccines, dental care, and spaying/neutering services to both cats and dogs. They also offer laser therapy that can help alleviate pain from arthritis. Groomer Janice Francis is on hand to bathe, trim, and style pets' hair into classic mohawks.

Shady Acres Pet Ranch is more like a farm than a typical boarding facility. On three acres of land, lush, green grass awaits hounds who can frolic in three play yards dappled with sunlight thanks to the property's 100-year-old oak trees. Pups spend their daylight hours playing with similarly-sized friends under the watchful eyes of pet-friendly staff members. Then, as the sun sets, they can hunker down in heated and air-conditioned closed-door suites that offer privacy for dogs who keep diaries. Though farm-like in many ways, the ranch does boast a number of modern amenities where it counts, including having a CPR– and First Aid–certified caretaker.
