  • Sengelmann Hall
The resident chefs at Sengelmann Hall infuse their European-inspired offerings with tastes and techniques channeled from Texan culinary traditions. European-inspired entrees include german ribs and sauerkraut ($15), which piles repurposed Wagner records with slow-cooked pork ribs and tangy sauerkraut. Schnitzer's chicken schnitzel ($16) sets deep-fried chicken breast afloat on a sea of lemon-butter sauce next to potatoes and vegetables. American fare stakes its own claim to table space, helping diners oil rusty jaw hinges with meal-prefacing portions of house-made queso or salsa cradled in hand-cut tortilla chips ($3.50) or bite into the Two Brothers burger’s six-ounce angus beef patty brushed with house mayonnaise and mustard ($8.50).

  • Unity Theatre
Unity Theatre has always maintained a close connection to downtown Brenham's history, even as it reinvents its present. Nowhere is that more evident than the company's choice of venues. The Brenham National Bank lobby served as Unity's first stage back in 1995 (a former freight depot served as its box office) until the company renovated a former warehouse into a professional theatrical venue. With it came enough space to produce four Main Stage productions, two studio productions, a summer family musical, and two concerts each season. That output has attracted actors, directors, designers and technicians from throughout the country, treating the region to the most rewarding theatrical experience possible. Unity Theatre cultivates homegrown talent, however, with workshops and classes.

  • Southern Concert Group
Recently featured on the cover of North of the Border magazine, Southern Concert Group's "Conroe Country Music Jam" and "Rockin' with the Oldies" concerts hoist the flag for fun-inducing tunes with a host of current bands and tribute artists bent on compelling fans' feet into motion. The "Conroe Country Music Jam" show culls five honky-tonk-happy groups for 10 hours of slide guitars and soaring melodies—including the Scooter Brown Band and Sammy Kershaw—that provide an ideal soundtrack for swaying with a loved one or grabbing a bull by the horns and inviting him to line-dance.

  • Texas Renaissance Festival
For eight weekends in the fall, a troupe of performing fairies, knights, royal personas, and jugging fools set up camp on the 55-acre grounds of the Texas Renaissance Faire. For 38 years, the Festival has re-created the 16th century’s appealing combination of simplicity and grandeur with more than 200 daily performances of live music, acrobatic comedies, and jousting. Actors portraying different levels of society—such as the English court and the pirates—roam the lolling landscape in character while performing comedic and informative bits including “Sound and Fury,” a Shakespearean vaudeville. At noon the Grande Marche parade catapults performers from the Globe Stage for a stroll throughout the park as they advertise their acts in a high-toned procession. On a less precise schedule, craftsmen concoct tangible marvels with skills of glassblowing and blacksmithing, while food purveyors wander the beaten paths or call from their booths, selling fare that ranges from sugar-coated nuts to roasted turkey legs. At close of day, fireworks light the sky to celebrate the festival's victory over time.

  • Santikos Theaters
Greek immigrant Louis Santikos founded his first movie theater in San Antonio in 1911, when silent moving pictures of train robberies and slapstick comedy were an exciting novelty. Today, the thriving regional theater empire continues the family tradition of dazzling audiences with attractions such as IMAX sensory journeys. Santikos's expansive theaters house up to 19 screens of first-run cinematic entertainment at some locations. Equipped with popcorn and sodas, moviegoers can nervously munch and sip their way through every pulse-pounding car chase, tragic missed connection, or gripping montage of drying paint. Screenings in 3-D of select films are brought to life by the gloriously immersive illuminations of Xpand 3-D projectors.
