Realizing the challenges of balancing family, career, and health, Brien Shamp decided to help mothers reduce stress and boost self-confidence via exercise. Pulling from his years of industry experience and fitness certifications, Brien spearheaded the boot-camp fitness program that has been lauded on Best of the Bay. He works with trainers at multiple gyms to lead women and other fitness-seekers through creative, constantly varied workouts. In addition to classes, Brien provides his clients with comprehensive nutritional advice while warning them of common diet mistakes, such as eating snacks with too much sugar or the realistic-looking plastic scones in their child's tea set.
Fueled by a passion to make the Asia-born sport of badminton more accessible and popular here in the United States, the founders of Bay Badminton Center lovingly maintain 37 regulation courts across three locations. They’ve designed everything to let players concentrate on their game, from an electronic court-queuing system that keeps everyone in order to adequate lighting that reduces strain on the eyes. They even installed a full Robbins flooring system that allows players to lob shuttlecocks back and forth without worrying about slipping on a mat or being unkind to their leg joints. After games, guests can hit the shower-equipped locker rooms to rinse off. Players who haven’t yet surgically replaced their hand with a racket can rent one or buy one at the fully equipped pro shop at each location.
Founded in 2000, the Burlingame Aquatic Club initially catered exclusively to competitive athletes, many of whom rose to win several swimming events and earn spots on Olympic Development teams. In 2011, the City of Burlingame recognized the nonprofit's successful track record by granting it management of all the aquatic programs run from the facility (except for high-school athletics), allowing the club to now host open swims, lessons, and community events. Having first encountered yoga in 1990, Robin Duffy quickly fell in love––a love that culminated in her founding Being Yoga eight years later. These yogis pass on traditions that stretch back for millennia inside their peaceful studio, marked by stenciled drawings of bamboo branches. The facility features locker rooms, a bamboo floor, and a boutique stocked with yoga equipment by Gaiam and Prana. To keep her karma levels on the jubilant end of the spectrum, Robin also aligns her studio with the Green Yoga Association, which encourages eco-friendly practices such as avoiding plastic water bottles and saluting ladybugs.
Aaron Parnell believes that good posture is much more than a matter of sitting up straight. The published author and sought-after speaker has appeared on radio and television programs to discuss his signature treatment—Reposturing Dynamics—which he uses to address conditions that range from arthritis pain to excess abdominal weight. Parnell developed the stretching-, breathing-, and massage-based technique after interviewing some 300 Olympic athletes at the 1984 Olympics about their physical, mental, and emotional keys to success. He has been performing the intense "massage workouts" for more than 25 years, and he has created books and videos to help clients continue the restorative process at home. His Reposturing Yoga DVD, for example, combines traditional Hatha yoga with cutting-edge advancements in sports performance and kinesiology.
Parnell also founded the Vitality Sciences Institute, where he trains and certifies other practitioners as part of a state-registered program. The classes teach participants to combat signs of aging with facial reposturing or improve their posture during workouts by installing a steel rod in their shirt.
