In 1976, educator, musician, and kinesiologist Robin Wes longed for a children's gym that prioritized personal growth over competition. Unveiled at a time when physical-education classes pushed students to focus almost exclusively on winning, Robin's program was swiftly adopted and is now used in more than 300 Little Gyms worldwide. Robin still pens original music to accompany lessons, which engage whippersnappers aged 4 months to 12 years with gymnastics, dance, karate, and parent and child activities.

Each of The Little Gym's classes introduces simple movements that sharpen motor skills and set brains whirring, allowing kids to progress at their own pace until they can finally build a computer out of macaroni and glitter. Staff members strive to build a base for lifelong social skills and self-assurance with each exercise, including activities rooted purely in fun, such as summer camps or birthday parties, which helped The Little Gym to earn title of #1 Birthday Chain in Parents Magazine.

The Idiot Box Comedy Club has a smart focus: to nurture local comedians. That's why it keeps area comics on its roster, giving them ample opportunity to share the stage with national headliners such as Last Comic Standing finalist Myq Kaplan. The club also hosts weekly improv shows starring the award-winning Idiot Boxers, a community-based troupe that's been crafting extemporaneous comedy scenes for more than 10 years. And to help keep their ranks growing, these improvisors hold classes to teach burgeoning funny people and kids who accidentally broke a window how to think on their feet.

Most gyms don't take kindly to members trying to climb the walls, but that's the whole point at The Ultimate Climbing Gym. Here, it's possible to ascend nearly every vertical surface, including a 40-foot lead climbing wall and more than 2,000 square feet of bouldering space.

Top-rope climbers can start out from 16 different stations, each with two or three routes that get them up to 35 feet off the ground. Kids and adults can participate in group or private classes if they're just starting out and want to hone their climbing skills. The gym also makes a great setting for birthday parties, especially if you bring along a cake stuffed with granola and protein powder.

A comedic abode of gut-busting proportions, DSI has hosted hundreds of joke slingers that have corralled scores of laugh-seeker smiles without nitrous-oxide tanks or clips of football-privates contact. A company of 45 active performers lives underneath the 84-seat non-smoking theater, constantly training with dummy microphones and audience dummies to provide optimal quip delivery. Owner Zach Ward leads this comedic cabal, and also has trained and worked with nationally known giggle catalysts of Saturday Night Live and MADtv fame. Visitors will be able to choose from a variety of scheduled Friday- and Saturday-night shows, including improv slams, stand-up, and slide shows of platypus photos.

On Stage's seasoned dance instructors provide bodily instruction to a range of students interested in learning the art of dance, from toddlers wishing to perfect their pirouettes to adults desiring to learn jazz, tap, or hip-hop struts. A smorgasbord of classes spans the age gamut, sending burgeoning boogiers ages 2–11 cavorting through basic moves and techniques that encompass tumbling, ballet, jazz, and tap. Or enroll sprouts in the Musical Theatre class, a session that fuses the art of dance with vocal training to give them the skills necessary to melodically showcase talents and properly choreograph foot-stomping temper tantrums. Older dancers and adults can choose from lyrical, ballet, tap, and jazz, or shake hips with the more mainstream dance moves of hip-hop. Each class combines the enjoyment of dance with a full-body workout that's more fun than chasing donuts inside an oversize gerbil wheel.
