Complex Barbell's coaches describe their gym as a "functional fitness facility." They conduct CrossFit?style workouts designed to improve a person's ability in multiple domains of fitness. They combine cardio, olympic lifting, gymnastics, plyometrics, and calisthenics into new workouts each day. They particularly specialize in teaching safety and proper-form, so that people can build strength, speed, and endurance with minimal risk of injury.

It may seem a heroic feat for the coaches to put in this level of focus on a day-to-day basis, but as lifelong athletes, they are prepared. They actually refer to themselves as The League, adopting super-heroic nicknames such as Coach Phoenix or Coach Bane. They pursue fitness as tirelessly as their namesakes pursue enemies or a contract with the most fashion-forward cape designer.

Amid the mix of vintage furniture and recycled materials that make up iGita's studio, experienced instructors guide their students toward physical and mental well-being. Students select classes in barre, hot yoga, Hatha, Vinyasa flow, or Pilates reformer, then enter the studio to find their mat, mat towel, and face towel already awaiting their arrival. Sessions of aerial yoga, barre, spin, and hot Pilates are also available. The staff also trains yoga teachers and offers tips on perfecting the art of the wise nod.

The beautiful confines of iGita surround visitors in antique furnishings, scores of living plants, and decor crafted from 400-year-old wood. The soothing ambiance is now home to a juice bar that features raw, vegan, organic, and gluten-free juices and smoothies. Guests can order a drink before their workouts and then have it waiting for them when they finish class. To further freshen up, complimentary bath towels await pupils at the front desk for those who want to use the showers. They also provide small plastic bags for students to store their used workout clothes in to take home.

It's impossible to feel left behind at a Quad spin class. This fact is true in a literal sense, as the indoor cycles are stationary, but it also reflects the welcoming mindset that prevails at each studio. Several introductory sessions hosted throughout the month acquaint students with the the Schwinn IC Pro bikes, as well as different hand positions and proper cycling form. Standard 60-minute lessons balance intervals of challenging speeds with more serene periods, permitting guests to set their own pace. Other class variations include 60-minute endurance rides and spinning combinations, which mix indoor cycling with exercises such as Pilates and deep stretches.

Q&A with Wendy Kaufman, Owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

We offer a good variety of classes, including many interval-based training classes that keep participants moving between spinning and strength training. Time passes by quickly during these classes, and they provide a different workout each time. With 17 bikes in our studio, we create an intimate setting that allows for camaraderie and personal attention from the instructors to help students achieve their goals.

Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?

music is critical to a cycle class - it really needs to inspire no matter what drill but the speed of the music will vary based on climbs or sprints - rock and roll and top 40 are really the best ways to go

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

We've worked with CrossFit South Oakville develop programs for ultimate interval training. These programs incorporate CrossFit and TRX techniques. Also, indoor cycling?also known as spinning?provides great cardiovascular benefits and a high-calorie burn. Combining spinning with strength or interval training takes it up a notch by building endurance and core strength.
