The life of a contractor can already take its toll on a back, but Stacey Reeves was a mountain biker, too. After a biking accident in which he injured his neck, Stacey turned to yoga as a way to exercise while hopefully easing his chronic pain. Suffice it to say he quickly became enamoured with it.

Still, Stacey frequently found himself the only man in any of his classes, despite its overwhelmingly positive effects on his physical and mental well-being. So he decided to found his own studio instead, soon registering as a certified instructor and creating a space where men could explore the form in a male-focused environment. Today, YoGuys holds weekly classes at each of the two spacious locations. Owing to his casual discovery of yoga, he takes a casual approach to classes, fostering a relaxed, organic atmosphere as he helps students tone their muscles through flowing movements, or yang, and tighten their joints in static poses, or yin, which together enable yogis to work multiple areas of their body at once without having to arm-wrestle an octopus.

Heated air seeps into students’ pores as they enter Bikram Yoga Burnaby’s two heated practice rooms, preparing muscles for workouts filled with deep, therapeutic stretches. Mindful of new and old faces alike, the instructors begin to demonstrate the 26 Hatha poses meant to promote health, longevity, and a youthful appearance. Each beginner-friendly pose builds upon the next, summoning cleansing beads of sweat as students flex and bend atop antimicrobial flooring and near wall-length mirrors. Focused breathing exercises help students expel stress with each exhalation, clearing minds of fog and worry.

Before and after classes, students may explore the 11,000-square-foot facility’s other amenities, which range from child care and towel service to showers and a juice bar. Fresh flowers add a hint of nature to the clean, modern lines of marble countertops and lounge tables, where students gather to socialize before heading to the nearby SkyTrain or a flying monkey parked in the studio’s free lot.

Booming bass lines emanate from Zumba Latin Fitness Ztudio's 3,000-watt sound system, enticing passersby to peer into its doors. Inside the space, one might expect to see bartenders serving colourful margaritas to packs of club-goers. Instead, the dancers forgo the booze for swigs of water as they sweat and burn calories performing Zumba's Latin-inspired dance moves to the beats of merengue, bachata, reggaeton, and quebradita. Owners Evelyn Cervera and Silvi Ortega infuse their original choreography with hints of their Mexican heritage, creating lively, hip-popping classes for patrons of all levels, ranging from beginner-friendly workouts to challenging master classes. After class, students can browse a boutique filled with fitness fashions, retrieve their young from the on-site play area, or visit the changing rooms to powder their noses, returning to the outside world feeling accomplished and unable to stop shimmying.
