Tommy Nevin's Pub was founded by Steven Prescott and christened for his grandfather Thomas Nevin, a WWI veteran. The flagship location in Evanston touts a bright red façade that pays homage to the renowned Temple Bar in Dublin, and the menus at all three locations likewise salute the culture of the Emerald Isle. Though it inhabits a decidedly Celtic corner of the pub world, Chicago Bar Project deemed the Evanston outpost “the best bar in the suburbs” for its “intriguing combination of country Irish pub, modern Chicago bar and cutting-edge alternative music venue.” Chefs whip up corned beef and shepherd's pie as bartenders handle taps and spirits. Friends can cheer on local sports teams on TV or wrack their brains to remember the name of Azerbaijan's currency and most popular potato-chip flavor at weekly trivia nights.
The consortium of professional instructors at Fred Astaire Dance Studio, which was cofounded by legendary toe tapper Fred Astaire himself, shepherd students of all ages and skill levels through lessons that span the style spectrum. Patrons can learn how to cavort through classic waltz and fox-trot romps or swivel through the modern steps of salsa, swing, or mambo. For dancers hoping to hoof it up in a social setting, the Summer Dance Open House provides a one-night extravaganza of instruction, demonstrations, and amateur firewalking. During the event, guests sip complimentary glasses of white wine and nibble on snacks as they take mental notes during rumba and swing classes. Professional performances will set a fleet-footed example as guests practice steps with new and familiar partners and shimmy the night away. Apprentice foot flashers can develop their skills and confidence in three group classes, during which they'll trip the light fantastic with fellow students without tripping on the light itself.
Since opening its doors in 1985, Capri Ristorante & Catering has expanded to four locations including Capri Mex, which strays from the other locations' Italian fare with a menu of Mexican delights. Chefs fill the kitchen with aromas of carne asada and marinated chicken sizzling on the grill as diners patiently await the impending smorgasbord in the dining room's family-friendly confines. Options such as à la carte burritos and quesadillas leave room for extras, or dinner combos featuring rice, beans, and guacamole quell hunger whether chosen for dine-in, carryout, or storage in a refrigerated safety deposit box.
Corks and Brushes treats visitors to relaxing wine-and-painting parties for adults and birthday parties for kids and teens, leaving every participant with the priceless party favor of a self-made masterpiece. Grown-up guests bring along bottles of wine and good friends as they learn to fill canvases with colorful designs and pictures over plates of cheese, olives, and charcuterie. Drop-in classes, private parties, and corporate events impart impressive artistic skills as pupils learn to turn blank canvases into works of art, or make stunning pieces of painted furniture out of boring things to sit on.
Addy first became fascinated with eyelashes on a trip to Vietnam, when she encountered a number of women who possessed long, luxurious lashes. After falling in love with the look of lush lashes, she decided to open Eye Love Lash & Nail Studio. Today, Addy calls upon five years of experience as she applies partial or full sets of faux lashes to individual, natural lashes. Sets range from the cat-eye look—with lashes applied only in corners of the eyes—to dramatic, all-encompassing bridal looks. Addy also offers a slew of nailcare services enhanced by sugar scrubs, light massages, and organic shea butter.
