Founded with the goal of outfitting its pupils with the skills necessary to excel in the spa and salon industries, Milan Institute of Cosmetology deploys a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes professionalism and hands-on learning to train fledgling cosmetologists and aestheticians around the country. As the most important aspect of the course of study, student salons and spas serve as a real-world classroom wherein nascent beauticians—under the careful supervision of their instructors—can practice their newly minted skills on humans or sentient mannequins. The beauty apprentices gussy up patrons head to toe via sundry lavish salon and spa services—specific to each location—that may include nail services, haircare, facials therapeutic massages, or nourishing body wraps.
After an innocent vacation to Boise captured the hearts of Jennifer and Marcelo Godoi, the duo moved to the city and planted the roots of Paint ‘n Sip. There the Godois beckon artists of every predilection and skill level to tie on an apron and unleash their inner Rembrandts. A calendar full of different subjects and themes teaches pupils to capture the glinting light on a sunflower’s petals, find the right hue of carmine to depict an overflowing wine glass, or dignify a trio of birds by filling their nest with monocles. At night's end, participants bring their dried work home to hang on the living-room wall or mantel.
In pools heated to a comfortable 90 degrees, Aqua-Tots Swim School's experienced instructors pass their aquatic knowledge onto younger generations. Before taking to the waters, the team sorts prospective swimmers into one of eight swim levels along with similarly skilled and aged peers. Teachers work alongside the parents of infants and toddlers to practice water safety skills and other swimming fundamentals such as blowing bubbles and interpreting whale songs. More advanced swimmers, meanwhile, master different strokes and techniques, and teachers incorporate more advanced concepts and the rules of competitive swimming as their charges progress through the levels.
Like many dancers, Echo Waldron-Noble discovered her passion in her youth, and has spent a lifetime perfecting her art with professional troupes such as the Idaho Dance Theatre, Ballet West, and the Off Center Dance Project. When not busy wowing audiences on stage, she honed her teaching skills as an adjunct faculty member of dance at Boise State University. Inspired to share her love of the art and build a lasting appreciation for it in her community, she opened the Echo School of Dance in 2011.
Inside the modern studio, Echo and her teachers educate children and adults with tiered classes that group peers by expertise level, helping students focus on basic or advanced techniques that are both challenging and fun. Classes regularly culminate in performances by students, including a holiday program, full spring recital, and regular flash mobs at local weddings.
