Fitness industry veteran Dulcinea Lee Hellings's goal is to bring a high-quality, effective exercise regimen to people who don't love big gyms or can't afford personal trainers. In 2004, she realized that mornings could be used for more than hitting the snooze button over and over for two hours, and founded Boot Camp "Morning Crunch!" to help fledgling exercisers whip into shape.
She designs her all-levels programs to be scream-free morning motivators⎯the first stop in her patrons' journey of daily accomplishments. The fast-paced, ever-changing circuit of strength and cardio exercises keeps bodies guessing and minds from becoming bored. Each of the boot camp's 12 outdoor locations has a different dedicated trainer who gets to know each student personally, remembering their names and memorizing any interesting freckle patterns. They complement their morning routines with a smattering of evening options for those who prefer to work out after the day's activities.
At Dream Body Boot Camp, which was voted San Diego A-List's best boot camp of 2012, trainer Matthew Johnson and his staff of specialized trainers help patrons to quickly sculpt physiques into top form during indoor and outdoor workouts that pair cardio moves with strength-boosting exercises. Instead of painting muscle ripples onto participants’ abs, each of Johnson’s instructors draws from a kinesiology degree or a national personal-training certification when designing a new 60-minute workout each day. Before their first class, students meet with Johnson to get acquainted and set their fitness goals, such as looking good in a bikini or ripping through a T-shirt to reveal their swimsuit with one powerful body flex. In the course of 10 minutes, he asks clients what they’d like to achieve in class and how they’ve pursued their goals in the past.
Once the talking ends, the training begins, and the motivational instructors put patrons to work hefting dumbbells, straining against Trx suspension gear, and flipping giant tires end over end. Johnson and his trainers leave long runs out of their workouts, opting instead for tire hopping, jumping rope, and other dynamic exercises to elevate heart rates.
Master trainer Grace De La Rue understands the difficulty of losing weight. Even as a proficient martial artist with a third-degree black belt in tae kwon do and several championship titles, she still carried around a bit of extra weight. It wasn’t until she studied nutrition—and eventually garnered an APEX nutrition certification—that she was able to drop the pounds and understand the ins and outs of weight loss. Today, Grace puts her expertise to use in developing Fatfighter Fitness’s boot-camp programs, through which she and certified personal trainer Erick LeVell guide her clients. In addition to challenging workouts at Fatfighter’s indoor facility, she provides trainees with meal plans and tips to help them shed weight and maximize their fitness.
Skyefit launches workout routines to challenging new levels with one-on-one personal-training programs, boot-camp sessions, and a stock of both standard and unconventional equipment. Coed and women's-only boot-camp sessions help to shake up routines and shed calories in classes that take place five times per week inside Skyefit's facility or at a local park with mallards quacking motivational lines from Rocky in the background.

The friendly, certified trainers at South Bay Fit Camp use a wide variety of games, activities, and exercises during their upbeat fitness classes. These group workouts are infinitely more fun than childhood recesses spent running from feral tire-swings. Classes meet outdoors regardless of the weather, so dress limbs in easy to peel layers, slather on sunscreen, and bring water-friendly clothing. Each workout challenges exercisers of all fitness levels, and South Bay Fit Camp's smaller classes make sure no one is left behind in the woods and eaten by bears dressed as Richard Simmons. In addition to basic boot-camp classes, South Bay also offers bridal fit camp for brides and grooms as well as mommy fit camp for new and soon-to-be mothers.
