BOLDFITNESS owner Jeff Archibald offers functional fitness regimens such as weightlifting, core training and body-weight exercises. Jeff helps clients of all ages and abilities get in shape, reach their full athletic potential, recover from injuries, or train for sporting events. With scenic workouts along the Santa Monica Mountains, Jeff may take clients walking, hiking, running, and mountain or road biking. Shorter workouts may take clients to unconventional locales such as the 4th Street Stairs in Santa Monica, an ideal setting for full-body conditioning. But Jeff doesn't eschew traditional fitness facilities entirely—he regularly works with individuals in homes, at a health club, and at an indoor rock climbing venue. But at some point between reps, he'll likely suggest a trip outdoors for cardio training.

Disguised in wetsuits, flippers, and diving masks, humans almost seem indistinguishable from the scores of aquatic life that thrive among the San Diego coastline. In the water, curious sea lions tug playfully at divers' fins, and thick stalks of kelp wave like Queen Elizabeth telling the gathered crowd to go home already. With access to five separate sites in which to see such wonders, the guides at San Diego Excellent Adventures tailor their adventures?whether snorkeling, diving, or paddling?around the experience level of each tour group, ensuring an easy assimilation to undersea life.

During guided dives along La Jolla Shores, swimmers peer in on frolicking creatures such as lobsters, octopuses, and leopard sharks, and standup paddleboards grant access to Mission Bay's shoreline views previously seen only by terribly lost Venetian gondoliers. Currently the largest manmade bay in the country, Mission is known for its calm waters suited to beginners just learning to explore the ocean.

Armed with gear from City Kayak, guests paddle past scenic San Francisco sites such as Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and South Beach Harbor during guided or unguided treks. Visitors can navigate their way beneath the Lefty O'Doul drawbridge and catch home-run hits soaring out of the baseball stadium and into McCovey Cove, or advanced paddlers can traverse strong winds and tidal currents en route to Treasure Island. City Kayak also schedules classes, which teach students basic sea-kayaking skills, self-rescue techniques, and how to eskimo roll, an escape maneuver that one could use to avoid the songs of tone-deaf penguins. City Kayak rents out gear such as wetsuits and booties and also sells a collection of kayaks, paddles, and accessories to equip paddlers for future travels.

Kings River Expeditions offers scenic rafting expeditions in the Sierra and Sequoia National Forests led by professional, experienced guides. Both beginners and intermediate whitewaterers can experience the welcoming spray of the class 3 Kings River during a one-day trip that begins at either 7:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. at Twin Pines Camp. After undergoing a safety orientation, rafters embark on a bus ride that takes them to the starting point ten miles upriver, where sailless sailors are divided into crews of up to seven before hitting the rapids. Then, encircled by the loving caresses of a life jacket and the gentle grippiness of blue and yellow paddles, boaters submit themselves to the wild whims of the Kings River as it winds through beautiful wooded hills and smashes around stony sandbars. Both trips include a satisfying lunch of burgers and chips. Post-trip, rafters can partake in volleyball and horseshoe shining before returning to their land-life.

Day hikes can cover a variety of locales around the Sierras, including Woods Lake and Grouse Ridge. The basic mountain bike trip can be tailored to both those newly liberated from training wheels and experienced shredders. Those with tenacity to spare (kept in extra jars) might consider joining the Cult of Rock Octopus with the basic rock-climbing course, where they'll find a fittingly challenging introduction to entry-level techniques, knot tying, and belaying (intermediate climbers will have plenty of time to play and build upon their pre-existing skills). Check Peak Adventures' calendar to reserve the next time that works for you, and the friendly adventure specialists will add more excursion dates to accommodate a high volume of Groupon customers.
