Sandra Leelook and Shauna Judar have been creating their own exercise routines since they were 17. Sandra's inspiration grew from her struggle with her weight. Now 50 pounds lighter, she continues to conquer the scale by staying active and eating nutritious food. For more than a decade, Shauna has fought her own battles in the kickboxing ring while drawing on her muay thai training and sharing her knowledge with students.
After gaining personal-training certification through CanFitPro, Sandra and Shauna opened Xtreme Bootcamp, where they craft custom workouts that shock bodies into shape with strength training, cardio circuits, plyometrics, and kickboxing drills. Their refusal to do the same workout twice keeps students on their toes, and unique class packages offer commitments that range from eight weeks to one year. Each option includes a fitness assessment, nutritional support, and a schedule of classes held outdoors or inside a fully equipped gym. When they aren't molding groups of svelte soldiers for the impending donut uprising, they lead focused personal-training and small-group sessions.
Sifu Robert Rinas embarked on his martial-arts training at the age of 15. Now a level 10 gold-sash black belt, he opened Breakthrough Martial Arts & Fitness to bestow his knowledge upon others. Rinas and his team of instructors use two training rooms to teach Kickboxing Plus, yoga, and wing chun kung fu. They also teach self-confidence and fitness to preschool-aged children during the Little Ninjas program. The studio includes a pro shop stocked with uniforms, jedi master costumes, and safety equipment.
Battlegrounds Athletic Research and Development all started with one speed bag hung in a garage. Over the years, those spartan beginnings turned into a full-scale gym that now offers sports conditioning and training in various fitness disciplines and martial arts. Expert instructors lead classes for all ages and fitness levels in areas that include boxing, muay thai, and fitness boot camps.
The Classical Martial Arts Centre specializes both in physical training and personal development. Sensei Gregg Skoryk leads karate, tai chi, kobudo, and children's martial-arts classes that help students learn to defend themselves while crafting a solid foundation for self-discipline and confidence. The three main tenets of the martial-arts center are: respect, compassion, and gratitude. He encourages all students to apply these principles to everyone in their lives from their parents and friends to their country and teachers.
Building a toddler's confidence and defeating an opponent on the martial arts mat might seem like very different activities. At Caissie Karate, however, you can learn to do both things with the same set of tools. Led by Sensei Colin Caissie, the classes cater to students of all ages and experience levels, teaching them how to strike and block while instilling mental focus. Caissie's own martial arts study began at a young age, and he eventually sought to elevate his understanding of the sport by teaching beginners. So, six days a week, his pupils enter the dojo for classes separated by belt color, age, and the number of times they've met Bruce Lee.
