Jean Madeline Aveda Institute beautifies hair and bodies with a wide array of pampering services while preparing tomorrow's stylists to forge the fashion frontier. Wielding an arsenal of contemporary knowledge and organic Aveda products, these well-educated cosmetologists-in-training can sculpt over-tussled manes into timeless coiffeurs ($16) or snip a couple inches off to avoid sweeping stray candy wrappers across the floor with every step ($12). An aromatherapy wrap can relax away inner city stressors by massaging in a choice of scented oils ($35). Those whose facial planes have dulled with the sandpapering of time will enjoy the customized facial, where a torso massage is combined with a mix of products to treat specific skin types until countenances are as radiant as a cherub in a spotlight ($33). With their easy touch-screen instructions, the portable photo-booths of Reliable Photobooths Inc. capture images of jubilant attendees at events throughout Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware with ease. To further preserve memories, staffers assemble high-resolution images onto a DVD and host pictures in a password-protected online gallery for six months so event attendees can download, print, and share their favorite shots. Along with its standard package, Reliable Photobooths Inc. enhances soirees with add-ons such as props, scrapbooks, additional print options, photo-strip frames, and an on-site Facebook uploading option.
Its expansive facilities stuffed to the gills with Charles Brand and Vandercook printing machines, Second State Press grants the community access to self-stamped art. Members gain access to studio time for rent by the hour, month, or year, as well as invitations to special events, talks, and demos. Additionally, anyone can sign up for one of Second State Press's many beginner-friendly classes. Those especially committed to the craft might be honored with Fob Holder status, which awards 24-hour access in exchange for a few responsibilities around the studio, such as cleaning or finally shredding the newspaper monster lurking in the basement.
