Founded in 1963, Central New York Karate and Kobudo Schools has a history nearly as rich as karate itself. The schools' classes foster self-discipline, healthfulness, and self-defense for children and adults alike. The instructors for adult classes average a decade of experience apiece, each well versed in the disciplines of Okinawan Goju Ryu karate and kobudo.
What began as eight racquetball courts in 1978 has grown into a family fitness center housing exercise machines, group classes, indoor pools, volleyball, basketball, and a smoothie bar. Penfield Fitness and Racquet Club members make use of an endless supply of free weights and Technogym or Life Fitness cardio equipment equipped with TVs for personal viewing.
A team of trainers leads 99 group fitness classes each week, such as Zumba dance aerobics, Pilates, and yoga as well as nationwide programs including Les Mills and SilverSneakers. In keeping with their heritage, trainers host racquetball lessons, leagues, and tournaments for adults and children. The instructors at Team Andrello believe that students of any age can benefit from mixed martial arts, whether they're preschoolers or retirees. Of course, different age groups will reap different benefits, so each class level has a varied set of goals. Lil Champion classes help 3- to 6-year-olds improve their motor skills and social skills. Once they've graduated onto Juniors classes, kids work on building confidence while learning the basics of self-defense, safety awareness, and nonviolent ways to solve conflicts and win thumb wars. And adult classes teach students aged 13 and older more advanced defense techniques while helping them release stress and get in a great workout. Whether geared toward children or adults, classes combine the fundamentals of boxing, karate, jujitsu, and other disciplines to help students achieve a well-rounded martial-arts education.
Over the last 30-plus years, Chris Herzog has been in and out of the ring, competing in kickboxing, judo, and Russian sambo competitions, just three of the combat styles in which he holds an instructional certification. Joined by 22-year boxing veteran Wally "The Weapon" MacDonald?nicknamed for his ability to set off airport metal detectors with his mind?the two provide comprehensive instruction in many styles of martial arts popular in professional fighting today.
