Big-box gyms filled with elaborate weight-training machines leave trainers at CrossFit Energy shaking their heads. That's because they know that fancy equipment isn't what gets people fit. Instead, their small-group workouts focus on functional movements such as squats and deadlifts, supplemented with bursts of high-intensity aerobic activity. This straightforward approach to exercise yields more effective workouts for participants of all ages and levels, as well as some much needed rest for the hamsters that power all treadmills.
At CrossFit Copley, trainers with a combined 35 years of experience lead exhilarating CrossFit Basics courses, showing novices the ropes and introducing them to more advanced exercises. Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
CrossFit incorporates movements found in everyday life at high intensity. That intensity is relative to each participant. Our workouts change daily, so you will never get bored with one routine. This is fitness for everybody.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain”? Why or why not?
To an extent. You should be working out at a level that is outside your comfort zone to see maximum results. However, we never want you to push so hard that you are in actual physical pain during or after exercise.
Do you run your gym according to a particular exercise philosophy?
Yes, we provide fitness regimens that help participants of every age, fitness level, and body type achieve success. We believe in creating a memorable, positive, and fun experience by being an intimidation-free gym.
CrossFit is often billed as functional fitness, something that prepares you physically for any of the various and sundry physical challenges that life may present. Rampant CrossFit's coaches take that philosophy and personalize it by getting to know each gym member and their fitness goals. Then, they help those members work toward those accomplishments, preparing them to take on the physical tasks that their own, unique lives demand.
For CrossFit Medina’s owner and coach Jim Cartwright, CrossFit is about more than a successful workout that doesn’t get boring—it’s also about the community. When FOX8 visited CrossFit Medina, they stumbled into an electric atmosphere that showed groups of athletes working together to accomplish their goals, much like a group of ants would work together to bench-press a tomato.
CrossFit students submit themselves to the Workout of the Day (WOD), a constantly changing workout that can be as short as 2 minutes or as long as 35 minutes. The programs blend principles of fitness disciplines such as strength training, cardio training, and gymnastics, forming routines that are anything but routine. Though the moves vary, students might be expected to row on the rowing machine, perform Olympic-style weight lifts, and execute conditioning exercises such as box jumps, pull-ups, and dips among others. All the while, CrossFit Medina’s trainers encircle the class, lending tips and giving individual attention to students when necessary.
