"Vin hesten," a Norwegian phrase meaning "wine horses," is an appropriate title for a stable located right in the middle of Temecula Valley's wine country. And though wine and horseback riding is a major draw for tourists and locals, Vin Hesten Trail Adventures has a far more humanitarian pursuit. Every trail horse onsite is a rescue from a neighboring ranch that may otherwise have been sent to auction or slaughter. Guests can stop by for a quick lesson, purchase gear, or opt for a guided trail ride through the lush outlying wine country.
Few things are as satisfying as hearing the swish of a ball hitting a soccer net, except for giving someone else the opportunity to experience that joy. Pass It Forward embodies this ethic with its "buy a ball, donate a ball" program. With every purchase of the organization's eco-friendly, match-quality soccer balls, a similar ball finds its way to an underserved child or community. These balls go around the world, to children in Africa and other underserved areas, and to under-funded clubs in the US. Once properly equipped and on the field, youth can build camaraderie, endurance, teamwork, leadership, and a sense of cultural identity and pride.

Inland Empire Waterkeeper envisions the Upper Santa Ana River Watershed as a sustainable, pollution-free watershed backed by a community of motivated water stewards. To achieve this vision, the organization works to protect and enhance the watershed's quality through a variety of ways. Its programs include working with government agencies to ensure proactive policy; raising awareness through volunteer cleanup events; and educating students during hands-on field trips. Restoration and water-quality programs help achieve the more long-term goals of protecting inland waterways while tackling the complex process of restoring degraded waterways to healthy, functional ecosystems.

With its comfortable classrooms, computer lab, lounge, and private study areas, American English Institute gives newcomers to the country a preview of typical school settings. But, its curriculum is tailored entirely to nonnative English speakers. The Intensive English program, a nearly full-time eight-week course, represents the core of the curriculum. The course helps students climb through five levels of English aptitude, from beginner to advanced, and quickly shapes their reading and writing skills, grammar, and speaking and listening abilities. Students can also opt for goal-specific programs, such as GED or university prep.
Each year, more than 400 students participate in a HOBY California leadership program. These same students later participate in community service projects across the state, utilizing the critical-thinking, project-planning, and decision-making skills they learned at the seminars.
As students work to improve their schools and communities, they’re helping to fulfill HOBY’s mission—to inspire and empower youth to make a positive difference in the community, relying on understanding and effective, compassionate leadership. Along with service projects and other events throughout the year, HOBY California organizes four youth leadership seminars every June at local universities. HOBY is run entirely by volunteers, 95% of whom are recent alumni of the group's leadership seminars.
