My Social Booth captures memories with two types of photo booths: a traditional booth with silky curtains and an elegant freestanding booth. All three have advanced cameras, touchscreens, and high-resolution inkjet printers that create black-and-white, color, or sepia-toned photo strips. Groups can get creative with props and accessories such as mustache silhouettes.

Arthur Murray Dance Studio has been a leading name in franchise dance since 1912, when the entrepreneur began selling mail-order dance lessons. Expanding his reach, he enlisted teachers to spread his signature dance lessons on first-class steamships and skyrocketed to fame in the '30s after introducing the public to such dances as the Lambeth Walk and the Big Apple. By the 1950s, Arthur and his wife, Kathryn, were hosting their own highly popular TV show on ABC, the Arthur Murray Dance Party, which ran for 12 years. Today, Arthur Murray's team prepares students for rug cutting at special events and weekend nightclub jaunts. Clients who arrive to lessons partnerless will be paired up with an instructor as the teachers assess their current skill level and make recommendations on the most appropriate program. Throughout lessons, instructors teach the foundations of two to four dances from a long list of styles that range from Latin to country-western, helping students to learn basic step patterns, timing, and the ability to lead or follow.

Patrons step into the locally owned Patterson Self-Storage and Moving Box Supply Store, a winner of Santa Barbara Independent’s Best of 2008 and 2009 Self-Storage, to procure secure boxes and storage materials for bundling up household valuables. For added padding, patrons can wrap fragile figurines in large plastic bubble wrap ($0.40/ft.) or fill pools with packing peanuts ($6.55) to perfect jackknives during the winter. Customers can tuck prized possessions into small ($1.85) or large ($3.85) boxes, or send them in holiday shipping cubes ($1.20). For customers in a rush to get to the post office or to the pony express, sets of supplies are available, such as the quick pack ($26.32), which includes small, medium, and large boxes, as well as a roll of tape.

Drawing on traditions passed down through the generations before her, Nimita Dhirajlal prepares vegetarian Indian cuisine following the Ayurvedic philosophy. To that end, she cooks to promote health with a menu based on only vegetarian ingredients, as well as to nurture the community by using locally sourced ingredients. At Nimita's Cuisine, she shares not only her meals through catering services, but also her techniques for preparing the piquant dishes through cooking classes.

Dhirajlal—a culinary instructor since the mid '90s—leads classes that teach students how to cook intuitively with a knowledge of the spices and methods, rather than just how to follow a recipe. At the end of each three-hour class, she invites the students to sit down and enjoy their vegetarian creations together, after first promising to not incite a food fight.

She also offers catering for large groups and delivers weekly baskets packed with meals such as saag paneer, butternut squash garbanzo curry, and moong bean daal to subscribers' doorsteps each Monday.

Raptors of Rock, Hollywood Crisis, and Trip Aces might not be household names yet, but they’re rising stars in Santa Barbara. That’s thanks to Santa Barbara Youth Music Academy, which specializes in helping talented, dedicated young musicians form their own rock bands and ensembles. Under the guidance of expert musicians and instructors, groups spend time rehearsing tunes, refining their collective playing skills, and developing pithy responses to journalists’ questions. The academy likewise encourages students to hone their individual talents during weekly private lessons in instruments such as guitar, drums, and voice. Once the band starts gelling, SBYMA schedules gigs at various venues, including multi-band showcases. For budding musicians interested in a less intensive commitment, the academy also hosts six-week sessions and summer programs.
