When Becky and Ben Starr first sipped mead at a Renaissance fair years ago, they never thought that moment would be the one that changed their lives. They liked the taste so much, they started fermenting their own batches of the honey and water at home to the delight of their friends, who started showing up with empty wine bottles. In 2006, the Starrs entered their first contest and swept the floor. Of the 210 entries at the International Mead Association’s 2006 Mead Festival, their mead took home best in show. From that moment on, they decided to take their hobby seriously, so they opened Starrlight Mead, where honey from their own bees and those of local beekeepers is transformed into a variety of different meads.

For more than 40 years, Robert Roskind had a vision of opening a caf? that would serve as a community gathering space. That dream came to fruition with Oasis in Carr Mill. Visitors read or converse over cups of Counter Culture Coffee or organic beer and nibble locally baked pastries, vegan burritos, and sandwiches from Foster's. Local speakers often deliver better-living presentations in the evenings, musicians play acoustic music on weekend nights, and the cafe shows spiritual movies from their Movies-That-Matter series on Friday nights. The caf?'s decor is elegantly rustic, with wooden floors and ceilings, a beaded chandelier, and a lounge area with luxuriously large pillows.

Young artists flock to Glazed Expectations' charming studio to learn a variety of clay-based building techniques, such as the pinch method, coiling, slab work, and cartooning (figurines). After-school classes also impart knowledge about paint application, texturing, and the fire-breathing hamsters that power most traditional kilns. Experienced and friendly instructors soothe novice nerves and show youngsters how to harness their inner Michelangelo. This Groupon covers the class fee, materials, glazes, and kiln firing, and the 1.5-hour sessions take place between 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. every Tuesday through Friday.
