Sure, most people smile in photos. But in Brian Hilson's portraiture work, his subjects' smiles are so natural and radiant that they don't look posed—it looks like he caught them in a moment of genuine happiness. This is likely in part to his mission to give each project "a fresh perspective instead of applying a formula," one that has led to his pictures being seen everywhere from local bars to Zagat.com. He's worked with food, street fashion, headshots, and bridal work and is currently focusing on LGBT weddings. He also leads classes in photography and software such as Photoshop.

The staff at CSD Sports Framing & Memorabilia routinely preserve high-value artifacts behind glass—from Emmitt Smith's Dancing with the Stars outfit to a piece of the floor from Michael Jordan's last game—but that's not the only thing that sets this framing store apart. The framers here handcraft nearly every aspect their projects in-house, including the frame, mounts, and custom engravings. Although the framing of art and memorabilia is their primary focus, the staff still traffics in the autographed merchandise that helped launch their business. Visitors to the shop can ogle a Hall of Fame football signed by the Dallas Cowboys and renew the Curse of the Bambino on a Red Sox World Series banner.

When Brandee Brantly takes a photograph, she's not just looking to capture a smile. She's also looking to capture a story. Though she's been a self-described "photo enthusiast" for more than 20 years, Brantly's interest in the art form spiked as soon as she had children. She wanted to document every moment of their young lives, and to bathe those moments in the nostalgic glow that's unique to a candid photograph. Today, Brantly points her lens at plenty of people besides her own children. She travels around Carrollton and the greater Dallas area, seeking out subjects with their own stories to tell. She prefers on-location shoots for their narrative and artistic potential; rather than pose people against stark studio backgrounds, she can snap them sitting in their favorite public park or on top of their sworn enemy's Mercedes.
