With more than 20 years in the business, Wagner Dance & Music is a mecca for dance instruction. Classes are held in 3,600 square feet of space and studios outfitted with high-tech sound systems, expansive mirrors, and “floating” maple-wood floors. Students ranging from 2 years of age to seniors can learn moves from genres such as tap, ballet, hip-hop, and jazz. Additionally, university-trained instructors offer private lessons for individuals interested in learning to play the piano and guitar—the standard acoustic or kleenex-box variety.
Mesa Arts Center curates artistic goings-on inside a sleek structure filled with four theaters, five art galleries, and 14 art studios. Graced by the likes of Yo-Yo Ma and Bill Cosby, the stages of the facility's theaters showcase a cultural cocktail of live music, Broadway, dance, and comedy performances. Grooming the next generation of artisans with the help of advanced equipment, seasoned instructors teach everything from acting and beading to woodworking and welding during art classes tailored to both kids and adults.
For inspiration, students and visitors can stroll through the galleries of the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum for glimpses at a revolving selection of contemporary art from international artists. Speckled with gardens, shapely architecture, and colorful lighting, the facility’s modern grounds welcome guests for everyday visits or annual events and festivals.
A sprawling mandala design covers the floor of Plaza de Anaya's main dance studio, welcoming dancers in with warmth and beauty. Amid that artistic setting, seasoned instructors teach dance styles from around the world that include belly dancing, barefoot flamenco, and anaya tribal dancing. Cultural gatherings are an important part of the school's community, which is why the studio also schedules an array of monthly events and workshops that might be dance-based or include henna tattoos that dance when you pinch them.
Jester’z offers up game-based and family-friendly improv, featuring absurd scenarios capable of loosening up straight-laced librarians and splitting the sides of hardened motorcycle gangs. The performers make up situations and details as they go along, and what hilarity emerges is a result of training, audience suggestion, and underlying psychological issues. Experience this comedic instability firsthand at a Jester’z show. The show's 10 p.m. start time coupled with the clean laughs make the experience equally ideal for filling awkward silences during first dates and preventing awkward outbursts during after-hours office outings.
The Men of Soul Tour brings together three legendary R & B and soul singers who electrify audiences with an evening of velvety vocals. With a storied career stretching back to 1969, former L.T.D. frontman Jeffrey Osborne uses his sleek baritone to croon such ear-tickling classics as "You Should Be Mine" and "Stay With Me Tonight." Also, Freddie Jackson, holder of 16 Billboard R & B top-10 hits, such as "Have You Ever Loved Somebody," sets hearts aflutter with his seductive falsetto. Howard Hewett, meanwhile, offers up his own soulful tribute to broken hearts and frustratingly illegible candy hearts with "Can U Feel Me."
