Elk Castle Shooting Sports was originally founded as the Ewell Cross Gun Shop in 1947. Instructors at Bullet Trap call upon their onsite range and classroom space to teach courses, most of which focus on helping students qualify for a concealed-handgun license. Beyond that, they go over the fundamentals in beginner handgun lessons and work with students during private sessions. The range connects to a 4,200-square-foot showroom, where the staff advises on arms, ammo, and accessories.
House of Courage exists as one of the area's only schools certified in C.O.B.R.A. self-defense, a method intended to promote personal safety and confidence with techniques that anybody can learn and store in their bag of tricks. Halt potential attackers after six hours of training, which is based on law-enforcement tactics and criminal-psychology theory and intended for use in plausible situations, such as being mugged or thwarting an evil genius from illegally double-parking his zeppelin. House of Courage's versatile instructors boast experience in karate, CPR, mixed martial arts, and righteous one-liners. The one-day clinic generally takes place on Saturdays, and the school's full schedule is available here.
Every staff member at Shoot Smart attends NRA Range Safety Officer training, and each instructor passes a rigorous certification program. Only then are they ready to take students through Shoot Smart's proprietary training path. That curriculum encompasses five levels of firearms classes, starting with a New Shooter I session for complete beginners. From there, instructors cover more advanced skills, such as firing in the dark and operating an AR-15. Shoot Smart's team also includes a gunsmith, who is available to clean and maintain firearms Tuesday?Saturday.
