The husband-and-wife team behind Health Whiz Fitness Studio helps clients get in shape and become healthier than those talking vegetables in children's cartoons. Bruce Louis ran his first half marathon when he was only 9 years old. By the time he was 13, he was running full marathons—and he hasn't stopped since. Health and fitness have anchored his life, from boxing and martial-arts classes to his stint in the US Army, where he helped overweight soldiers get back in shape, including Bruce's wife and fellow US Army veteran Kasey Louis. While serving in the army, she prepared nutritious menus for soldiers. On the home front, she waged a personal battle with hypertension and high cholesterol, eventually losing nearly 50 pounds through exercise and healthy eating. Together, Bruce and Kasey work with their clients on goals such as losing body fat, training for sports, and controlling portion sizes.
Fit Body Boot Camp instructors guide clients toward their fitness and weight-loss goals at locations throughout the world. They lead group workouts that integrate cardio exercise with resistance training, weight training, and light alligator wrestling, keeping sessions varied in order to avoid disheartening plateaus. Nutritional guidance supplements tailored fitness programs to ensure that clients are properly fueled to lose, gain, or maintain their weight.
As he was growing up, Isaac Ho wore a sweater outside for all seasons in hopes of disguising a heavy frame. When he did shed his unwanted pounds through exercise, he still felt somewhat unfulfilled—the routines to which he had devoted countless hours didn't strike him as efficient or fun. He began to experiment with fitness techniques, amassing a list of methods that produced results without sacrificing safety or endorsing quick fixes, such as wearing water wings under your clothes. His research led him to become a certified personal trainer and weight-loss specialist, and his drive to educate others has inspired doctors, gym owners, and fellow fitness experts alike. Today, Isaac runs BeFit Tacoma as the culmination of his trials and subsequent discoveries. He enlists other personal trainers based both on their skills and their personalities, believing that charisma goes a long way toward encouraging clients. Inside the private facility, programs from boot camp to semi-private training spark a metamorphosis in guests. Isaac receives clients at any initial fitness level and guides them on their quest to lose weight, tone muscle, and eat healthily, assuring them that "it's not where you start, it's where you finish."
Whether they are coaching athletes or leading boot-camp classes, the trainers at The Xtreme 18 reach beyond verbal motivation to inspire their students with individual attention, specialized training, and a community support system. Inside their gym, a trove of advanced fitness equipment challenges muscles to rethink monotonous routines. The ThunderBell—a modified dumbbell with handles on either end—can act as a kettlebell, barbell, or scepter for summoning Thor's strength during weightlifting workouts. Staff members might also attach resistance bands to various body parts for agility and plyometric drills, limbering and strengthening physiques for a boost in sports performance.
Though its gear strikes many as high-tech, The Xtreme 18's setting is accessible and family focused. Classes grouped by age welcome students as young as 6 to tackle bodyweight exercises and endurance trials, pushing them toward a lifetime of healthy habits and fitness.
Sunlight pours onto the exposed-brick walls of the Tacoma Fitness Boot Camp and Jowers Training Systems private studio, where exercise rings dangle from the ceiling and colorful weights line the shelves. Throughout the week, the studio is a flurry of motion as students of all ages and fitness levels undergo the high-intensity exercise routines of boot-camp classes and personal-training sessions. Fitness instructors oversee each of the 30 weekly boot-camp classes and provide students with motivational tools and nutrition guidelines to spur their efforts outside of class. Personal-training sessions adhere to the specialty program designed by certified personal trainer and fitness aficionado Jeff Jowers, who combines fat-burning exercises with nutritional guidance to banish unwanted pounds more efficiently than traditional workouts or covering clothing in helium balloons.
