Fresh baking is the specialty at Las Delicias Bakery. This comes in many forms, such as sweetbreads, donuts, and cheesecakes. For a birthday or special event, perhaps a graduation, the bakers create customized cakes, which can be topped with chocolates and fruit mixtures and artfully sculpted into a theme—a vivid Call of Duty cake, to name one recent example.
The chefs at Tres Pesos Bar & Grill import both their recipes and their ingredients straight from Mexico. They meld seafood into eight varieties of ceviche and douse shrimp cocktails in hot “Nayarit-style” sauce, modeled after the version made popular in the Mexican state of Nayarit. Behind the bar, shakers and blenders thrum with the sound of mixing margaritas, mojitos, martinis, and sangria.
Jazzy Cheesecakes’ oven masters whip up their creative desserts for birthday parties, corporate proms, and everyday sweet-tooth cravings taking place all over Charlotte. Their menu of creamy cakes includes spins on favorite flavors such as red velvet and Reese’s, as well as seasonal choices such as pumpkin, sweet potato, and wrapping paper. Their eponymous cheesecakes also come in cupcake form, along with chewy brownies, specialty cakes, and pies.
In addition to their familial relation, Jo-Ann Morlando and her daughter Dominica Clementi share a passion for baking. Both women learned to bake as children, inspired by the old-world family recipes passed down through generations by their nonas, or grandmothers. And yet both saw baking as just a hobby—until, under the pressure of constant requests for treats from friends, they decided to open their own bakery. In 2004, Nona's Sweets was born. By 2012, it had been named a Talk of the Town for three straight years, a feat few 8-year-olds—Benjamin Button excepted—have accomplished.
Amid the intimate earth-toned interiors and old photographs that line the walls of Nona's Sweets float the aromas of cafe dishes such as grilled paninis, breakfast sandwiches, and quiche. And yet the main attractions are still Jo-Ann and Dominica's whimsical desserts: the shop displays "shelves of intricate cakes––in the shapes of teakettles and wooden ships, among others," according to the Charlotte Observer. The mother-daughter team crafts these layered desserts with more than a dozen fillings and icings. They also conjure classic Italian sweets and pastries such as tiramisu, sfogliatelle, and cannoli. Their desserts frequently make appearances outside the shop, having featured in events such as the wedding of Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis and as the football in a dream of Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis.
The scents of fresh breads, stuffed pastries, and decadent sweets fill Golden Bakery. Customers can peruse halal-friendly items such as naan bread, baklava, and fatayer—a pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or meat. To complement these eats, Golden Bakery serves drinks such as jellab juice and banana or strawberry fruit cocktails with milk.
