In 2005, Geoff and Missy Owen had a dream of breaking up Southend's chain of fast-food franchises and opening up their own mom and pop bagel shop full of handmade bagels and cream cheese. Today, with the help of Ashley Wyrick, a culinary arts graduate from Johnson & Wales University, they operate Owen's Bagel and Deli, which is known for its New York?style steamed bagel sandwiches piled high with Boar's Head meats.
Rib-sticking lunches include the Bob-B-Que, with ham, bacon, smoked cheddar, and barbecue sauce; and the Kool Jules, with turkey, veggie cream cheese, and sprouts on a bialy. Vegetarian options abound, and Owen's also offers food kids can get behind, much like the menu at an imaginary tea party. Salads, wraps, and locally made coffee from Pure Intentions round out the options.
