The gap was, indeed, large enough for a man to squeeze through. He took the old man’s shirt and looped it around the remaining iron bar.

Q&A with April Nolan, Director And Instructor

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

We specialize in personal attention and have a commitment to creating the best training for each individual. We keep our classes small so that each instructor can analyze her students and provide modifications, variations, and exercises to accommodate individual experience or training level.

Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain?? Why or why not?

No. Our goal is to instill a lifelong love of movement, dance and physical fitness in our young students. We are committed to teaching appropriate form and alignment to avoid injury or muscle imbalance, while keeping class fun and exciting.

What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?

A typical youth class semester begins with learning or reviewing the basics in the relevant dance form, then progresses through more challenging dance exercises and choreography. A typical weekly class begins with a warm-up and stretch, movement across the floor as individuals or by twos, and ends with center floor group choreography. We encourage our students and celebrate their different personalities.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

All of our youth dance instructors have degrees in dance or have many years experience teaching, performing and training. The majority of our instructors also have certifications in fitness including Pilates, yoga, personal training, and group cardio classes.

Mel Markowski believes in the power of dance. To her, dancing is more than an art form—it’s a way of life. To that end, she has dedicated herself to helping others dance their way to health. Her cardio hip-hop classes pair high-energy dance moves with infectious music, enabling students to get their heart rates up while enjoying themselves. Mel demonstrates easy-to-follow moves first, allowing slow-footed students or overeager centaurs to follow along and let loose.

Charlotte Salsa's instructors acquaint students with salsa's invigorating rhythms, marrying the intensity of Cuban mambo with Latin jazz. Hip-swinging pupils pair up before learning the basics—including forward, side-to-side, and back-to-back steps—over the course of 10 courage-building sessions. Competition-winner Rodrigo A. Jimenez and ex-El Salvadoran salsa queen Wendy Jimenez instruct beginner classes that help unlock the turntable in your hips, blending flashy turns, twists, and spins into a whirling storm of devastating desire. The lesson calendar is flexible, with one-hour sessions held throughout the week.

Though competitive ballroom dancer Dana Glandon spends much of her time preparing for and winning national dance championships, she's still found the time to establish several dance studios. Drawing from more than 20 years of dance experience, she joins Tony Prado?a WDC World Pro-Am finalist, stage performer, and tango dancer commended by the USTA?in coaching students of all skill levels at Queen City Ballroom. Through detail-oriented instruction and customized lesson plans, they and their instructors give customers personalized attention, earning accolades as one of Charlotte's best ballroom dance studios from CBS Charlotte.

During classes, instructors teach basic techniques of leading and following before moving on to specific steps. Students may learn Latin dances such as salsa, bolero, and merengue; ballroom dances such as foxtrot, Argentine tango, and Viennese waltz; and social dances such as swing, hustle, and two-step. While well versed in the language of dance, the instructors also speak 10 other languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, and Slovakian.
