  • Sofa Cafe
A lot of people love coffee. But you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who loves it more than Diego Gonzales, who ditched his first career to tour South America, the United States, and Europe and learn about different methods of coffee production. By then an internationally trained barista, Gonzales opened the first Sof? Caf? in S?o Paulo. After finding success with three locations there, he opened his first shop in the U.S., bringing to Boston his signature like-home style: painted cabinets, plush couches, and exposed brick. And just like at home, guests can have their coffee made whichever way they like. Sof? Caf?'s baristas have an Aeropress, a Chemex, a french press, and a Hario V60 on hand. Among the specialty drinks available, there is the Zest (a cup of espresso with a hint of citrus) and the Affogato (a Sof? Caf? creation). There are plenty of cold drinks, too, including the Cult?iced espresso, milk, Nutella, and Bailey's creamer. And like a rapper's voicemail greeting, the food is totally fresh, with macarons, sticky buns, and croissants all delivered fresh daily.

For larger groups, catering is available, delivering platters of Swiss-style cookies and breakfasts to offices or Y2K bunkers that ran out of food.

  • Cafe Esplanade
Lots of restaurants afford their diners stunning views, but Charles River Bistro truly makes the most of its location. The eatery boasts Parisian-style outdoor seating with views of the Charles River lagoon. Here, passersby sit with their pooches and enjoy lobster rolls and hot paninis?plus vegetarian and vegan eats?and get a side of complimentary doggie treats. After their meals, guests can grab the caf?'s frisbees, whiffle balls, soccer balls, and chessboards and head to the surrounding park grounds. Charles River Bistro also sells staple outdoor supplies, including sunscreen, beach blankets, and insect repellant. It encourages people to stock up on snacks and supplies and head to the adjacent DCR Hatch Shell to watch a flick or stare unblinking into the eyes of a musician until they become so uncomfortable that they hand over a guitar pick.
