Bird-of-prey expert Mike Dupuy shares his love of the 4,000-year-old sport of falconry during exciting and informative demonstrations with his avian costars. A professional public speaker, Mike entertains his audiences with personal anecdotes and motivational speeches that use falconry as a metaphor to encourage them to follow their dreams. Guests also get to learn about each feathered raptor while it surveys the crowd for wild Energizer bunnies, and Mike encourages audience interaction by inviting volunteers from the audience to hold the falcon and try in vain to teach it to bark like a dog.
Though it's often said that the game of golf requires a lifetime to master, it seems the world neglected to mention that to Philadelphia Golf Lessons’ maestro Adz Kozlowski. Adz's ascendancy to membership in the PGA of America required only eight years; he first started golfing as a 14-year-old and won his pro certification by the age of 22, beginning a 20-year-and-running career as a reputed instructor with an impressive competitive resume, as evidenced by the sizzling round of 67 he carded at a 2006 New Jersey pro invitational.
Adz focuses on making the most of his pupils' natural swing motions by placing emphasis on the "impact position," or the orientation of the clubhead as it makes contact with golf balls or neighbors' flowerbeds. Adz has also created two golf instructional DVDs—"'N Synch Golf" and "Stroke Savers Golf"—which cover concepts such as how to adapt a smoother swing tempo, tackle every type of short-game shot, and hypnotize fellow golfers into giving pupils a gimme on any putt within 10 feet of the cup.
When Brian McInerney reflects on the humble beginnings of Wheel Fun Rentals, he points to his childhood passion for bikes. "As far back as I can remember, I had a real love affair with bicycles," he recalls. During a trip to Italy in 1987, Brian's affinity for cycling blossomed into a full-fledged obsession when he spotted locals' transporter of choice, the surrey. Inspired, he began importing the Italian four-wheelers to a rental business in the U.S. that eventually expanded into Wheel Fun Rentals, now a nationwide web of shops that also loans out bikes, electric cars and mopeds, and man-powered watercraft. Atop bicycles and surreys built for solo riders or entire families, patrons embark on self-guided tours of major U.S. cities. Led by maps and lists of nearby sites of historical or cultural significance, riders zoom down bike paths and safe, lightly trafficked streets. Adventuresome athletes can also compete in activities such as surrey scavenger hunts and blindfold obstacle courses navigated via shouted instructions from a seeing teammate or exceptionally long rounds of trial and error.
IsItPoppin's nightlife-savvy critics work to connect customers with well-reviewed nightclubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants throughout the city of Philadelphia. The event planners also host special soirees, such as drink tastings and parties at a range of area restaurants, clubs, and water parks. At many of these events, they invite adults to mingle within a cloud of pulsing dance music, brightly colored lights, and exotic libations. They often document each venture in photos for keepsakes or to remind their future grandchildren of a time when the robots hadn't yet outlawed dancing.
The 160 acres of undulating meadows and copses of oak, maple, sweet gum, and pine at The Links Golf Club were transformed into a championship course by Frederick W. Hawtree, who designed more than 300 courses around the globe, including the Royal Birkdale course, in partnership with his father and son. Hawtree drew inspiration from the natural lay of the land while contriving narrow fairways and bunkered greens that reward precision. Water comes into play on the 8th, 11th, and 18th holes, swallowing poorly aimed balls so oysters can turn them into pearls. Before hitting the course, golfers can rev their engines at any of the driving range’s 15 hitting stations. After a day of sinking cleated feet into bent grass, players can toast success at the copper-topped bar in the member lounge or bite into sandwiches and seafood at the club's restaurant.
Course at a Glance:
- 18-hole, par 72 course
- Length of 6,725 yards
- Course rating of 71.5
- Slope rating of 133
- Four tee options

A combination magic shop and theater, South Street Magic revels in the impossible. Every Friday night, mentalist Lucas Simmons presents his jaw-dropping Deadly Game of Chance, where, armed only with his mastery of the mind, he risks his fingers in a bag full of broken glass randomly placed by an audience member. Sunday afternoons, Mr. Messado dons his finest hat and wand for two family-friendly shows that might incorporate juggling, puppets, and classic illusions, such as convincing the audience that they have free will. In the evening, Dan Hauss of Paper Crane Magic demonstrates his preternatural powers of illusion, with which he destroys and repairs ordinary cards at will, melds shoelaces even as their wearers gape, and causes audience members' signatures to manifest on cards in his deck. Thursday nights, South Street Magic features a differently weekly performer from across the United States and abroad. Previous examples have included Peter McLanachan from Scotland, Mr. Bottle from Singapore, and Max Krause from Phoenix, and upcoming performers include vaudeville enthusiast Fred Siegel and world-traveling illusionist Sam Sandler, who both hail from the Philadelphia area.
