Q&A with Sara Hokin, Director of Operations

Apart from your business's main attraction, do you offer any "hidden" services or activities that visitors are always delighted to learn about?

Our incentive programs emphasize and reward effort, teamwork, heart, etc. We have special relationships with local, collegiate, and professional women's teams that offer our camps the opportunity for in-camp clinics and professional sports outings.

As the old adage says, "Stuff happens." What training do you and your staff have to stay ahead of the unexpected?

Our staff training is pretty intense, to the extent that we role play worst-case scenarios. We practice adjusting to different circumstances, including quick transitions from outside to inside, should we encounter extreme weather.

What is the one feature of your business that you're most proud of?

Our impact both on the fields and courts and off?our program emphasizes growth as an athlete as [much as] it does growth as a person.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

We are proud of the relationships we develop and maintain through the years with our camp families. Throughout these years, we have worked hard to create a customized teaching technique and unique understanding of how young girls best learn and thrive. The results are a program and environment that effectively foster their love for sports and fitness to last a lifetime. This is our passion. This is our mission.

Since 2001, Tennis on the Lake has fostered myriad fitness regimens and a sense of community through year-round programs for tennis, yoga, and cross-training. During all of the outdoor classes, instructors help students develop correct techniques while having fun and staying active. Tennis classes take place at several Chicagoland parks including Waveland Park, which allows outdoor adventurers to hone racket-wielding abilities while surveying lakefront scenery. During winter months, Tennis on the Lake rents snowshoes to guests interested in exploring nearby parks or perfecting roundhouse-kick court serves.

Play Golf and Tennis's instructors help students hone forehands and chips throughout the year. Aspirant tennis players and golfers improve their game at the Diversey Driving Range and the Hamlin Park tennis courts in the summer, and on Mars in the event of a planetary evacuation. Players learn either sport under the direction of renowned golf and tennis professional Ron Carroll, or work on executing perfect turns in a nonfunctioning golf cart with instructor-supplied engine noises.

McFetridge Sports Center's tireless staff hosts non-stop activity for 18 hours a day, seven days a week, taking advantage of every square foot the massive facility has to offer. Trainers take to the courts with tennis pupils, practicing on six tournament-quality indoor courts or, weather-permitting, four outdoor ones. Teams face off in the outdoor basketball courts or host showdowns on the baseball field.

Perhaps the most iconic amenity at the Center, though, is it's NHL-sized ice arena, which hosts lessons in figure and hockey skating year-round, in addition to competitive play in various ice sports. Those not on the ice can catch the action from one of the 1,200 seats in the stands. They can even opt to burn calories as they spectate by hitting a treadmill at the fitness center, which overlooks the rink.

Mounted on the walls of Strings Attached is a colorful array of crisp new tennis, racquetball, squash, and badminton rackets awaiting their chance to pummel their respective spheres across the court. As players peruse the equipment made by heavyweights such as Wilson, Prince, and Dunlop, a knowledgeable staff stands by, ready to dole out pro advice on which rackets best meet their size or style of play. Players can also upgrade their wardrobes by slipping into new clothes, trying on supportive shoes, and folding themselves into durable gear bags. Expert technicians, meanwhile, help customers' rackets reach their greatest potential by stabilizing grips or tightening and re-stringing down-at-the-heel equipment.
