After pursuing a media-focused career, during which she worked for MTV and in marketing, advertising, and special events for an entertainment company, Jennie Channer collaborated with her father and brother to open a full-service salon and spa in 2007. Today, the Chicago native's team of skilled stylists, colorists, and spa specialists attracts an assortment of clientele, including a woman who's been coming in every other week since opening day and a 4-year-old girl who refers to each staffer as "girlfriend" or "boyfriend." Clients can choose from a variety of salon-spa services, ranging from haircuts with coloring to pampering packages specifically designed for expectant mothers. Because Blueberry Moon is an Aveda Lifestyle Salon Spa, all products are composed of 96%-naturally derived ingredients extracted from high-quality botanicals and distilled Mother Nature kisses.
Before officially opening the doors to the public, Jennie put the salon-spa—located inside a building more than 100 years old—through a complete gut renovation to unearth its rich history and hidden brick walls. She then added morsels of local history by installing fixtures she acquired from a local salvage yard, including the former front door of a demolished Gold Coast mansion and an old printing table from historical Printers Row. Jennie has also been modernizing the salon-spa to minimize its effect on the environment, incorporating technologies such as a reverse-osmosis water-filtration system and energy-efficient light bulbs filled with immortal fireflies.
When guests come in for Center Nails’ signature manicure and pedicure, they’re in for a treat. The spa’s nail specialists begin by immersing their clients’ hands and feet in an organic aromatherapy soak, which softens skin while treating the senses to intoxicating aromas. Next, they alternate wrapping hands and feet with lavender paraffin and warm towels, massage skin with an organic moisturizer, then color nails with coats of non-toxic polish. These treatments are only the beginning of an extensive list of nail services that also include no-chip manicures, nail art, and silk wraps.
Center Nails and Spa also flaunts signature facials for women and men, the former boasting extractions and a custom mask and the latter focusing on easing razor burn and revamping hydration levels. Advanced skin treatments such as diamond microdermabrasion and lactic-acid peels make skin look younger without resorting to invasive facelifts or harsh dimple-implantation procedures. The spa doesn’t skimp on the rest of the body, either, as their massage therapists knead muscles with custom strokes and waxing specialists swiftly remove hair from men’s and women’s bodies.
As he reported to Sheridan Road Magazine, Charles Ifergan took the first steps toward establishing his hairstyling empire at the age of 13, when he talked his way into a job at the chic Paris salon where his older brother worked. Just a decade later, he settled down in the Chicago area to establish the first of four salon locations and try to convince the John Hancock building to do something about its two glaring cowlicks, and his work has since garnered media features in publications such as Vogue and Marie Claire. Charles's continually educated stylists keep their deft fingers on the pulse of fashion trends, which they transform into edgy hairstyles for women and men. In addition to drenching hair in deep hydration with moroccan oil and texturizing coifs with Redken products, aestheticians venture to other corners of the body with a concise menu of spa services that includes facials, waxing, body wraps, and mani-pedis.
At Halsted Tan and Spa, Smart Tan–certified staff members help each client navigate high-powered tanning equipment and choose the option that best suits their golden goal. They steer traditional tanners towards lie-down or standup high-pressure beds, such as the SolarForce 648, where side tanners and shoulder tanners help bronze every curve, and built-in stereos flood ears with relaxing music or recordings of George Hamilton reading Goodnight Moon. For a sunless glow, airbrush artists tint skin with a custom paraben-free spray tan, while the VersaSpa booth gilds bodies in a four-pass process that includes a blow-dry and the option to add a pretreatment prep spray and tan-extending moisturizer.
To further beautify bodies, technicians dress up fingertips with artificial nails or long-lasting no-chip polish. They also offer teeth whitening, custom facials, and full-body-waxing services.
Who They Are
Rather than a handshake or an elaborate welcome dance, the staff at Eshe Day Spa and Salon greet each guest with a smile, an aromatic foot soak, and a mug of herbal tea or a glass of water. Though the spa—where staff perform services ranging from aromatic facials and body treatments to natural microdermabrasion—remains calm and quiet, the hair salon teems with bubbly conversation and laughter. As they chatter with clients, the stylists use Aveda haircare products to repair signs of breakage, reduce dandruff, and restore shine.
Inside this zen-inspired, full-service salon, patrons sip complimentary Japanese tea as they wait to be pampered from head to toe with relaxing spa services ranging from haircuts and highlights to Bioelements facials. Skin brightens after dullness and debris are buffed away via manual microdermabrasion, which uses super-fine pumice crystals and a strong arm instead of placing the face under a machine or inside a rock tumbler. Moka massages ease tension held in both the body and the brain with a blend of kneading styles customized from the salon's lineup of modalities, which include lymphatic drainage, deep tissue, prenatal, and reflexology. Before or after massages, clients are welcome to bask in the spa's steam room, which warms chilly skeletons to the marrow, or they can engage the services of one of the salon’s nail artists to treat toes to a pedicure with a soothing citrus salt scrub.
