When Ronald Wagster first opened Harmonious Decorating & Remodeling, Inc. in 1983, it was known as Ron's Decorating Service. Until 2007, he and his staff stuck mostly to home painting. But in 2008, they expanded their service list to encompass every aspect of construction and remodeling, including electrical and plumbing work. Today, the employees continue to remodel, waterproof, and even paint homes, all the while adhering strictly to EPA standards.

Four. That’s how many lanes co-owner Dick Drehobl removed when renovating the near century-old Lincoln Square Lanes in late 2012. But those lanes didn’t go to waste. They’re now the bar tops in the alley’s new sports bar and grill. Inside the new and improved space, patrons can marvel at made-over lanes as well as a variety of other activities, from pool tables, shuffleboard, and arcade games to live music played three nights a week from a stage framed by a 204-inch projection screen. Twenty flat screen TVs also surround patrons as they enjoy craft beers poured from 18 taps at the bar or savory fare chefs in the new kitchen cook up including a lobster roll with fries and a brunch pastry puff smothered in country gravy. Dick and his team have also gone to great lengths to jazz up the interior décor, removing paneling to expose the alley’s brick walls, removing the drop-ceilings to reveal it’s tin tiling, and installing three large windows for added natural light.

But all the new décor and amenities haven’t taken away from Lincoln Square Lanes vintage vibe. Chicago Magazine describes the remodeled alley as “…80s roller rink crossed with The Double Deuce from Road House.” And Dick was careful to keep the original “Lincoln Square Recreation” mural above the lanes, which was discovered a few years back during an experimental aboveground architectural dig.

This neighborhood hardware store caters to Do-It-Yourselfers of all kinds, but owner Matt Kollar has a special place for theater design. The native Chicagoan helped build sets at the Steppenwolf, Goodman, and Chopin theaters, and even recreated Harry Houdini’s water-torture chamber for a production. At Matty K’s Hardware Store, two aisles are dedicated to theater-production materials, including airline cables, glow tapes, and inflatable William Shakespeares.

You’ll also find plenty of tools and resources for other projects. Matty K’s paint room is stocked with tools and design books to help you find inspiration for your home. And the store stocks a wide selection of products for fall and winter, such as winterizing products, window plastic kits and thresholds, as well as rakes, and lawn bags. Kollar also hosts monthly workshops that focus on hands-on projects. Other perks at Matty K’s Hardware Store include a kids’ play area and a loyalty program for customers and local businesses.
