Following this season’s smash production of Elton John’s Aida, Bailiwick Chicago presents the Midwest premiere of Passing Strange, the hit Broadway rock musical. Featuring the indie-soul stylings of local Chicago band JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, Passing Strange takes audiences on a musical journey from middle-class America to Amsterdam and Berlin, with a score of original songs and heretofore untugged heartstrings. The Tony Award-winning musical charts a coming-of-age story of a young black man who leaves Los Angeles and his churchgoing family for a music-fueled mission of self discovery and caterpillar-like identity transformations. Part rock concert and part musical theater event, Passing Strange kicks off Friday and Saturday night showings with warm-up performances by local Chicago bands. Enjoy sizzling center-section seats to Bailiwick’s latest theatrical gem, and be sure to bring an ample supply of roses and rolodexes to toss onstage postperformance.
