A strong core improves posture and prevents injury—that’s the theory behind Pilates. At The Pilates Room, instructors put it into practice in more than 150 fitness classes a week at two studios. Students of all abilities strengthen their minds and muscles on the latest equipment, such as the Allegro Reformer, Pilates trapeze, and Exo Chair. To ensure personalized attention, classes are limited to a small number of students who are entirely covered with name tags.
Inspired by "the genius and innovation of Mozart and the masters," for 25 years Mostly Mozart has gathered together music-lovers, world-class musicians, and composers. The latter category doesn’t just include the group’s namesakes, child prodigy Li’l Mikey Mozart and his uncle Wolfgang, but a vast range of musical thinkers making pieces that feel as exciting today as Mozart’s did in 1770. A summer music festival (Southern California's largest) and chamber music concerts throughout the year comprise programs that specialize in fascinating juxtapositions: modern neuroscience with classical sonatas, for instance, or hummable songs from the British Isles with their soulmates from Italy.
Armone Sullivan has spent a lifetime researching how different workouts affect body composition. A former competitive cyclist and classically trained dancer, Sullivan fell in love with Pilates after discovering that it could slim down her bulky muscles. After training with three Pilates gurus across the country, including one of Joseph Pilates' first students, she realized her dream of opening her own gym.
Now, Sullivan and her fellow certified instructors (among them, a martial artist, a massage therapist, and a nutritionist) pump up clients' self-confidence through results-driven fitness programs and boast more than 100 years of combined experience. Pilates, kickboxing, and cycling classes boost muscle definition, balance, and flexibility. Trainers develop personalized fitness programs for competitive athletes, and help women fend off attackers with self-defense classes. In addition to teaching gym-goers, Sullivan and her crew mint new Pilates instructors. The studio's 7-month, 500-hour Pilates certification program covers traditional and modern forms as well as anatomy.
A childhood peppered with basketball, football, and volleyball couldn't keep Mary Murphy out of the ballroom after she was struck by the athleticism of the sport while watching a championship performance in her early twenties. She began to compete around the world, eventually slowing down enough to found Champion Ballroom Academy in 1990 and finally teaching there full-time in between stints on Fox's So You Think You Can Dance.
Mary has plucked like-minded instructors for her studio, some of whom created Core Rhythms, a Latin dance-based aerobics program. Many of the other teachers are competitive-dance champions or black belts in hula hoop. Aside from running a flourishing dance studio, Mary's palpable passion for the art form has also driven her to play a leading role in San Diego's Chance to Dance program, a curriculum that introduces school kids to the artistry and strength-building foundations of dance.
At Namaste Pacific Yoga, seasoned instructors dissolve stress and its symptoms with a relaxing blend of stretches, exhalations, and meditation. The studio specializes in Ashtanga Vinyasa instruction, which weaves ancient poses and deep breaths into a flowing sequence that cultivates strength, flexibility, and stress relief. Some routines also feature focusing exercises, which clear the mind of panic-inducing thoughts, such as a giraffe nabbing your diary from your second-story window. In addition to sharing personalized tips during group classes, teachers lead one-on-one yoga sessions to customize students' practices as they perfect their technique and alignment. After class, students may steam away any lingering tension in the studio's showers.
In addition to bolstering bodies with holistic exercise, studio owner Chris van der Merwe fortifies them with a stockade of vitamins, probiotics, and other nutritional supplements. His nutrition boot camps teach attendees how to boost energy by eating healthy meals that eschew pizza-wrapped candy bars stuffed with pizza-wrapped candy bars.
