Staff members at Rick's Rent-A-Boat outfit water-riders with the necessary safety equipment before sending them off for a ride on a professionally maintained jet ski, kayak, or boat. During excursions, riders safely glide over the ripples and spray of San Diego Bay's coastal waters atop a Kawasaki or Honda jet ski, kayak, or Triton ski boat. Sporting a provided life vest and drawing on operating instructions included with each rental, riders cruise atop their seafaring stallions, skimming over foamy waves and leading schools of local fish in a Hamlet lecture. Depending on Mother Nature's mood, guests can make waves 8 a.m.–8 p.m. every day of the week.
Kayaks glide serenely through the South Bay as the sightseers dip paddles into the water or stop to take pictures of migrating birds. Led by a docent of the Living Coast Discovery Center with eight years of experience, Chula Vista Kayak?s tours navigate these oft-overlooked waters in search of rare sights, such as the local Pacific green sea turtles coming up for air or the abundant wildlife including raptors, great blue herons, and egrets. Tours welcome beginners and seasoned kayakers alike; no matter their experience level, guests brush up on water safety with a 15-minute introduction before they?re clear to push off and explore.
A crew of former athletes and passionate locals with a love for the outdoors wait beneath the bright-red awnings at each Bike & Kayak Tours location to guide multiple expeditions through the natural sights around San Diego. The 7 Caves and Ecological Reserve kayak tour sends paddlers on an expedition to a 75-million-year-old sandstone cliff with seven sculpted sea caverns that resound echoes in seven-part harmony. In the spring, snorkeling trips follow the seasonal migration of leopard sharks as students paddle in the shallow waters of the sandy flats with harmless predators.
Lead kayaker Marie Humphrey and her team take patrons onto San Diego Bay and nearby waterways for lessons and sightseeing tours. With the skyline as the backdrop, the team leads lessons and tours that explore the region's natural attractions and run the gamut from moonlight tours to kayaking and camping trips. Locals and visitors can kayak El Capitan Reservoir and spot wild hogs and turkeys skulking through tall grasses as spotted sandpipers and willow flycatchers soar overhead. Meanwhile, whale watching sends paddlers out along the San Juan Islands where orcas and eagles challenge each other to yodeling contents, and San Diego Bay lets boaters get up-close views of sea lions and sea turtles.
Specialized tours even allow patrons to paddle under fireworks or on the bay with their dog as passenger. Additionally, kayak-based workout tours give guests a sun-soaked alternative to the gym and Humphrey's Concerts by the Bay lets families float to live music. To expand upon the adventure, Family Kayak Adventure Center also curates trips along the waters of Baja, Florida, the Northwest, and the Southwest.
When Brian McInerney reflects on the humble beginnings of Wheel Fun Rentals, Inc., he points to his childhood passion for bikes. "As far back as I can remember, I had a real love affair with bicycles," he recalls. During a trip to Italy in 1987, Brian's affinity for cycling blossomed into a full-fledged obsession when he spotted locals' transporter of choice, the surrey. Inspired, he began importing the Italian four-wheelers to a rental business in the U.S. that eventually expanded into Wheel Fun Rentals, now a nationwide web of shops that also loans out bikes, electric cars and mopeds, and man-powered watercraft. Adventuresome athletes can also compete in activities such as surrey scavenger hunts and blindfold obstacle courses navigated via shouted instructions from a seeing teammate or exceptionally long rounds of trial and error.
