More than 2,000 hours and counting. That's how long Jayne Cardell, the owner of Blyss Studio, has been practicing and teaching yoga. Her expertise comes in handy at her homey yoga studio, where she and her team of instructors schedule Vinyasa and Hatha yoga classes and build personal yoga cabanas from yoga blocks and mats. To help alleviate any muscle aches that may result from the workouts, Blyss also offers massage therapy.
Embellished with precarious overhangs and crevices, RockQuest Climbing Center’s 20,00-square-foot wall affords challenges to climbers of all skill levels. The expanse features separate areas for bouldering and roped climbing and is open to all climbers who can pass a simple belay test. A staff of experienced climbers, meanwhile, offers belay courses to acquaint newcomers with proper climbing technique and safety considerations.
Patty first discovered rock climbing in college. “I got sucked in right away,” she says. Before long, she found herself marrying a fellow climber—a man she met at Climb Time back when it was still managed by the original owners who also blended their relationship with climbing. “They got married at the gym,” Patty says, describing how the first owners scaled the roof to say their "I dos." Though Patty and her husband didn’t exchange rings at the top of a wall, they did decide to buy the gym.
The expansive arena challenges climbers with a 24-foot climbing wall, where novice and expert mountaineers alike grasp handholds with chalked palms or coax a gorilla to carry them up piggyback style. Along the other side of the facility, Patty and crew dare climbers to test their strength on a wide array of 15- to 60-degree bouldering inclines that sit above moveable pads to cushion jumps or falls.
The exuberant energy of childhood led many youthful explorers to climb their first tree, but the staff of EarthJoy Tree Adventures turned it into a lifetime pursuit. During safety-conscious lessons, instructors combine the rope-assisted techniques of rock-climbing with a few tree-specific tricks honed over lots of practice. They scurry up the trunks of old, vibrant trees, swing, surf and hang amid the branches, and rappel down. They teach students how to bring gear up with them during a climb and string a hammock between branches. Such hammocks provide a restful retreat from the world below—even a place to pass the night as humanity’s ancient ape-like ancestors must have: nestled among the high bows of a tree, waiting for a flash of lightning so they could read a few more words in their book.
