Students gather in Clear Wellness's practice spaces in small groups, focusing all attention on their instructor, who bends and curves limbs gracefully while demonstrating exercises with enormous muscle-toning potential, enhancing every gesture with directions to guide attendees' movements. Each workout blends elements from different disciplines, including Vinyasa- and Iyengar-style yoga, Pilates, TRX suspension training, and reiki, creating hybrid workouts demanding vigorous physical exertion and sharp mental focus. By limiting each class's attendance to four students, instructors can monitor every individual's form and posture, providing slight hands-on adjustments to correct any missteps. Outside of the practice room, staff members stock the shelves with TZone skincare products, which help to reverse the signs of aging with antioxidant-rich balms, collagen-building formulas, and millions of microscopic babies to fill pores.

In January 2014, temperatures in Cincinnati dipped as low as -6 ?F. The chill wasn't just unpleasant?it wreaked havoc on piping systems beneath the ground. But when a pipe froze and burst at The Breathing Room, the center's passionate owners and instructors decided to turn their bad luck into a blessing.

Instead of throwing their hands up in despair, they set to work making their yoga and Pilates studio into even more of a serene retreat than it had been before. They embarked on a full renovation, installing radiant floors to emanate therapeutic heat, and building a new second Pilates space and locker room. Today, the new and improved studio welcomes students to classes ranging from Booty Everywhere, a barre-fusion class that sculpts students' bodies with ballet-inspired movements, to Cardio Pilates, which centers around challenging Reformer workout techniques. An aesthetician, massage therapists, and Ayurvedic specialists have also joined the team, and a fluffy white canine named Duke regularly attends classes to help students fine tune their downward dog poses.

The instructors at Pendleton Pilates’ four locations teach 125 classes each week, showing students how to elongate and strengthen their muscles on mats, inflatable exercise balls, and the studio’s reformer machines. During each group or private session, instructors customize workouts that use a rotating selection of 500 core-focused movements developed by Joseph Pilates in 1945. Additional classes include sessions in which students use parallel ballet barres while performing Pilates exercises, as well as spinning classes at the Westchester location.

In the heart of Cincinnati’s business district, work ends and play begins. Here, at The Yoga Bar, bodies and minds bask in a vibe that’s both festive and calming, like a piñata brimming with ocean waves. Helmed by Rachel Roberts—an instructor who has trained in India, Bali, and Europe—this studio explores international yoga traditions such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Yin. Teeming with bends, balances, and other physical challenges, classes fill students with energy rather than draining it away. Healthful beverages such as kombucha and coconut water flow from a mahogany bar, hydrating drinkers as they take on ancient yoga poses and modern, Pilates-inspired movements. On Friday nights, classes blossom into yoga socials where live music, tarot-card readings, and fashion trunk shows punctuate deep-breathing exercises. In addition to shepherding students toward metaphysical wellness during group and private sessions, Rachel leads yoga retreats in exotic settings such as Bali’s beaches and the moon’s bowling alleys. Between classes and retreats, Rachel makes mantra-inspired jewelry and serves as a community ambassador for Lululemon Athletica.

Cydney Rabe has always loved the boost in strength and flexibility that Pilates afforded her, but it was a car accident that made her realize the important mind-body connection it also fosters. This realization came when she managed to completely heal her resulting shoulder injury through Pilates. At Core a Movement Studio, she follows the teachings of Joseph Pilates while harnessing the latest workout equipment—including Pilates Reformers, springboards, and Exo-chairs—to amplify each core-sculpting workout by pumping up resistance. And she keeps her Pilates and Corealign classes between 3 and 10 students to ensure that everyone receives personal attention as they strive to improve their posture and carve out fitter frames.

As a child, Charlotte Rayne flowed through yoga postures at her mother's side. When she got older, yoga resurfaced in her life periodically, but it wasn't central to her being. But in 2005, she decided to change that. To further her studies, she journeyed to India, where she mastered a Hatha-inspired method, and then to San Francisco, where she added Bhakti flow to her arsenal of techniques. Along with her fellow instructors at Covington Yoga, she channels her far-flung experiences into yoga and Pilates classes designed for patrons of all skill levels. The classes are built upon three yoga styles: Hatha, which is based on postures and breaths that focus attention inward; restorative, which promotes healing; and power, a fast-paced series of poses designed to build muscles and endurance. The benefits of her structured bending span spiritual, mental, and physical realms, from honing focus to enhancing strength and balance without transplanting your brain into Mary Lou Retton's body.
