Finding a babysitter is one thing that mothers don’t have to do in order to attend Stroller Strong’s fitness classes. That’s because children are always welcome at classes—in fact, the sessions are based around the act of pushing kids in strollers. Inside Leblond Recreation Center or outdoors at Ault Park, groups convene to burn calories and tone muscles behind the rolling wheels of their child’s buggy. Afterward, they spend 10 minutes working out abdominal muscles while kids play with the studio’s toys.

Though its name may conjure fantasies about sprinting down crowded streets or bench-pressing buses stalled in traffic, Urban Active Fitness grants its members abundant space in which to spread out and follow their workout proclivities. At dozens of locations across the Midwest and South, members can sculpt their bodies in whichever manner they choose—from personal training with resistance machines and free weights to group classes in cycling, Zumba, and Pilates. A number of group classes draw on the gym’s urban theme for inspiration. Urban Iron, for example, focuses on building muscles that resemble the cast-iron beams of skyscrapers, and Urban Yoga closely imitates the poses necessary to squeeze onto a subway train at rush hour.

Though bikes are the main focus at Cincinnati Bicycle Company, they aren't the only form of transportation on sale. The staff repairs and sells bikes, custom builds cycles, and keeps parts and accessories in stock, of course. But they also have a full selection of skateboards and the necessary accessories: wheels, tape, bearings, and clothing.

Since opening in 2003, Fusion MMA Cincinnati has participated in more than 75 mixed-martial-arts, kickboxing, and grappling events, transforming a number of its students into champions in those fields. But for individuals just looking to get fit and not necessarily to compete or stand up to an arrogant Rock 'Em Sock 'Em robot, the facility offers several classes open to people of all shapes, sizes, and ability levels. As heavy bags sway from the ceiling's exposed metal beams, instructors lead group sessions of Fusion MMA, which incorporates techniques from muay thai, kickboxing, and Brazilian jujitsu into one well-rounded workout. Fusion Fit, meanwhile, features a constantly evolving set of exercises, many of which incorporate functional movements and work with equipment.

For this 5K race, a normally tame park or other venue is transformed into Mean Streets, an urban-themed obstacle course. In the Construction Zone, participants navigate over and under traffic barriers of different heights followed by a dive into a trash-filled dumpster. After bypassing the dumpster zone, runners test their stamina as cat burglars, scrambling through first-floor windows and trespassing through backyards. They barely touch ground before scaling upward once again on the Time-to-Climb portion of the course, which features a Jason Bourne-esque run across the rooftops. Finally, contestants climb out a window and onto the fire escape, swinging across an 8-foot ladder to reach the finish.
