Though bikes are the main focus at Cincinnati Bicycle Company, they aren't the only form of transportation on sale. The staff repairs and sells bikes, custom builds cycles, and keeps parts and accessories in stock, of course. But they also have a full selection of skateboards and the necessary accessories: wheels, tape, bearings, and clothing.

Alongside experienced instructors, nationally ranked heavyweight boxer Danny Calhoun gets students fighting fit during boxing and martial-arts courses. Mr. Calhoun teaches students the same techniques for hand speed, footwork, and cardio endurance that he uses in his own pursuit of boxing's World Heavyweight Title. The facility's combat tutelage has drawn such professional athletes as Indianapolis Colts linebacker Tyjuan Hagler and UFC champion Rich Franklin to The Punch House's arenas. Inside the high-ceilinged gym, red walls frame the expanse of blue and black floor mats, bruised from the many ground-pound lessons during mixed-martial-arts classes. Heavy, full-length bags sway, only slightly malformed from the devastating combos students are taught to deliver.

Finding a babysitter is one thing that mothers don’t have to do in order to attend Stroller Strong’s fitness classes. That’s because children are always welcome at classes—in fact, the sessions are based around the act of pushing kids in strollers. Inside Leblond Recreation Center or outdoors at Ault Park, groups convene to burn calories and tone muscles behind the rolling wheels of their child’s buggy. Afterward, they spend 10 minutes working out abdominal muscles while kids play with the studio’s toys.

Q&A with Brian Calkins, President/Owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

We believe that fitness should be fun and inspiring. We believe that every woman should be healthy and fit, full of energy and enthusiasm for life, and look and feel fantastic! We believe that in order to get fit and healthy, all you have to do is ask your body to do just a little bit more than what it?s accustomed to doing, regardless of your current shape, size, age or ability. Adventure Boot Camp provides workouts that foster fun, support, community, accountability, inspiration, and teaches women how to look, feel, and perform their best in life.

Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain?? Why or why not?

I do not. In fact, I think in the context of today?s ?box? gyms, pushing intensity beyond capability, is completely stupid and entirely unnecessary. Does that mean exercise is easy? Of course not. Exercise must be smart in that it meets the participant at her level, and it progresses at her pace, based on her unique characteristics. Because the opposite is true too. The same ole routine, day in and day out, leads to stagnation, boredom, and no results. There?s a fine balance between exercise that is too hard, and workouts that are too easy in that they are a waste of time. Adventure Boot Camp has perfected that balance, we call the sweet spot in fitness.

Besides working out, what else can clients do to spend their time at your facility?

Clients come to our facility for workouts that are fun. They come to our facility for leading edge education on fitness, health, and nutrition. And they build lifetime relationships within our community.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

My approach to fitness has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, and I have been honored as one of the nation?s top 50 personal trainers by the American Association of Personal Trainers. I have been a local media consultant in the area of health and fitness for the past 8 years.

Though its name may conjure fantasies about sprinting down crowded streets or bench-pressing buses stalled in traffic, Urban Active Fitness grants its members abundant space in which to spread out and follow their workout proclivities. At dozens of locations across the Midwest and South, members can sculpt their bodies in whichever manner they choose—from personal training with resistance machines and free weights to group classes in cycling, Zumba, and Pilates. A number of group classes draw on the gym’s urban theme for inspiration. Urban Iron, for example, focuses on building muscles that resemble the cast-iron beams of skyscrapers, and Urban Yoga closely imitates the poses necessary to squeeze onto a subway train at rush hour.

When Hyde Park Tennis Club first opened in 1913, tennis was still a relatively new sport. By the end of 1915, 109 people had joined the tennis club, including some women, proving that the sport had staying power, unlike the passing trend of looking angry in photographs. Over the years the club has continued to grow in popularity, and many of its current members have been with HPTC for decades.

In a Hyde Park Living magazine article, members explained why they love the club so much, noting that players there are "competitive in a professional, friendly way" and that the club helps introduce players of similar skill levels to one another. It also may be due to HPTC's relaxed nature?no court reservations are ever needed, members can just come and go as they please. Tennis matches unfold on six Har-Tru clay courts, which tend to be easier on the joints and result in slower, higher bounces and more rallies.
