At Happy Chicks Bakery, Jana and Jessica craft sweet pastries and desserts with the mission of bringing joy to their patrons. But the bakers aren't churning out the same old treats: everything they create is vegan. That means the dairy, eggs, and tiny t-bone steaks typically found in baked goods have no place at Happy Chicks. Instead, the specialists rely on fresh seasonal and local ingredients to build a menu that includes cakes, cookies, macarons, pies, and croissants. Their seasonal flavors?which might include orange-blossom apricot cupcakes in the summer or carrot pistachio sheet cakes in the spring?are complemented by intricate design work, such as buttercream roses or fondant foxes.
You can still spot founder Bill “Mr. Goodies” Dickerson strolling around the Goodies Barbecue kitchen, testing sauces and ensuring the pork, ribs, and chicken are slowly pit-smoked just right. His daughter Creola Robinson has now taken over his business, overseeing the chefs as they dry-rub meats, fry up fish, and bake peach cobbler and chess pie.
They season a tangy tomato base with dashes of brown sugar and vinegar, resulting in the hot and mild barbecue sauces that reporters from City Beat lauded as “legendary.” The barbecue artists have been perfecting these recipes since the restaurant's founding in 1986, and today, their sauce can be found on the shelves of local grocery stores and flowing out of the water fountains of select community parks.
The creative culinarians at Aquarius Star’s Om Café transform organic, local ingredients into savory salads, sandwiches, and wraps that pair perfectly with fair-trade coffee and tea. The menu offers meat-free munchers a slew of vegetarian and vegan options, including the shareable organic hummus and veggie plate ($8.75), Om’s grilled blackened-tofu wrap ($8.75), and the Om salad, topped with raw nuts and homemade lemon-garlic dressing ($9.75). To Dan Kim, a red mango is something truly special. The fruit only becomes that color for a very brief time, when it's most ripe, most delicious, and most nutritious. This became an allegory for Dan, a frozen yogurt enthusiast, who was conceptualizing his first yogurt shop. He opened the first location in 2007, vowing to use all-natural ingredients that, like the red mango, are both tasty and healthy. His commitment to conscientious snacking certainly caught on, as the brand has since expanded to more than 200 locations throughout North and South America. In 2011, Red Mango took top honors for frozen yogurt shops and for healthy options in a Zagat poll.

The culinary team stirs lamb into classic curry, cooks chicken in onion-and-tomato mixes, and serves hyderabadi dum biryani. What made you want to work with food? When did you first develop that passion?
I always loved going to candy stores while growing up. I wanted to recreate the feeling of taking a trip down memory lane?feeling like a kid every time you go into a candy store like ours.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Our soft serve ice cream is available in vanilla and chocolate as well eight rotating flavors like caramel, butter pecan, butterscotch, and many more. All of our bulk candy is available to be used as toppings, ranging from gummies to chocolates and an endless possibility of combinations.
Are there any dishes on the menu you consider to be a hidden gem?not necessarily the most popular, but surprisingly delicious?
Chocolate covered bacon. We offer various kinds such as milk chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate with sea salt, dark chocolate with sea salt, and milk chocolate peanut butter. The bacon and chocolate together creates a good blend of salty and sweet and make for a very delicious treat.
