Until dogs evolve the thumbs needed to turn faucets or apply pomade, it’ll be up to their human owners to keep them groomed. To this end, Hot Dog Grooming’s staff welcomes clients into its canine salon with bathing stations that can accommodate dogs up to 130 pounds. The friendly, dog-loving stylists ply their expertise with clippers and shampoo to return fur back to its original sleekness, volume, and puppy-fresh scent. And since no spa would be complete without its matching hotel, the groomers also offer boarding and daycare services, along with a doggie taxi program that picks up and drops off four-legged guests at their homes.
Rose-Rich Veterinary Clinic expanded its pet-care services with the opening of its 10,000-square-foot facility in 2010. Cat condos built into a bay window, separate checkup, surgery, and treatment rooms, an isolation ward, and eight themed luxury dog suites are among the new amenities at the clinic, which first started serving the community’s furry friends nearly 50 years ago. The facility also makes room for six veterinarians and an animal-care team that keeps boarded pets fed, exercised, and up-to-date on global news.
For all that’s changed and improved with the recent expansion, much has stayed the same. Dr. Charles McDonald, who founded the practice back in 1964, is still a part of the medical team—now he specializes in large-animal care—and Dr. Tucker Robinson, who joined Dr. McDonald in 1966 as a young Texas A&M grad, is still there, too, looking after the smaller patients.
Following an oil spill in 1979, TWRC Wildlife Center established itself as an emergency room and rehabilitation facility where people could take sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife. Animals remain at the center and undergo medical care and regular feeding until they are strong enough to reenter the wild. The center also receives questions about wildlife issues and maintains a focus on public awareness through a variety of educational programs on urban ecosystems and conservation issues. TWRC only uses certified rehabilitators and veterinarians to handle the animals, and conducts its own two-day skills seminar to train rehabilitators every year.
