When Zachary Diebels teaches the skills needed to be a performing artist, he's speaking from experience. The 17-year music-industry veteran has had major-label and independent recording contracts with Hollywood Records and Spunout Records, and has toured with acts such as Foo Fighters, Filter, Limp Bizkit, Beck, and Kid Rock. A music producer by trade, Zach establishes a custom curriculum for each student that helps students build technical skills and learn music theory at a realistic pace. Every 90 days, students assess where they are and where they're headed as they deepen their musical pursuits in a supportive environment. As students sharpen their fretwork or rhythm skills, Rock Inc. can connect them with performance opportunities through the school’s ensemble and band program. Zach also teaches the production side of music in a recording studio tricked out with all the bells and whistles: microphones, compressors, MIDI capabilities, and analog bells and whistles.

Before making his mark in the bowling world and landing in the PBA Hall of Fame, hometown hero Steve Cook grew up practicing his craft at Fireside Lanes. Today, he serves as the proprietor of his old stomping grounds, fostering a friendly, supportive community built around his favorite sport, with youth and senior leagues alongside birthday parties, families, and groups of friends. A staff of PBA champions and trainers at The Strike Shop suits up serious bowlers with equipment tune-ups and lessons. After long sessions of knocking down pins and telekinetically keeping balls out of the gutter, guests chow down on sandwiches and burgers at the bar and grill, or immerse themselves in the racing games and air hockey tables of the nearby arcade.

As soon as children are old enough to walk, they are old enough to begin honing their coordination, body-awareness, and basic motor skills through engaging and age-appropriate gymnastics lessons. That's the central philosophy driving the instructors at Byers Gymnastics, which has four locations, and a 40-year legacy of providing both basic and competition-level training for boys and girls ranging from toddlers to teenagers. While youngsters learn the fundamentals of jumping, balancing, and rolling, older students can master more challenging routines and learn to safely use various pieces of traditional gymnastics equipment, such as the balance beams, floor, vault, and tumble trak, and the slightly off-kilter stepladder. These year-round programs cater to visitors of virtually all interests and levels, and share the common goal of building stamina and flexibility, while also teaching students the value of perseverance and self-determination.

The blazing Sacramento summer sun is easily forgotten after stepping into the cool Skatetown Ice Arena, where skates and sleds slice across the frosty floors of two NHL-sized ice rinks. The arena bustles with wintry activity year round, from lively open skating sessions to festive themed skating parties. To help avid patrons prepare to shine during special skating events, a team of professional skate instructors captain hockey clinics, youth synchronized skating teams, and instructional skating lessons for students of all ages and experience levels. The pro shop also equips athletes for the ice—knowledgeable rink staffers outfit guests with skates in a range of sizes and styles, and provide athletes with repair services and gear. The expansive ice arena even features an onsite cafe, where servers dole out selections from a menu of pretzels, corndogs, and specialty coffee drinks that can thaw any frozen-solid feet.

After spending 10 years as a driving range-only facility, Sunrise Golf Course unveiled its 9-hole course in 1984 and invited players to challenge the par 31 layout. Now nearing its 30th birthday, the course still presents a test for players of all skill levels as they drive their golf balls over rolling hills and try to avoid the creek that intersects the land. Thanks to an abundance of fairway-lining trees, the course also offers plenty of shade, keeping players cool and protecting golf balls from sunburn.
