During World War I, Greek immigrant Louis Pappas served in the Army as a personal chef to General John Pershing. To give the hungry general some extra nutrition, Louis began adding scoops of potato salad to his traditional greek salads. When Louis returned to the United States, he opened up his own restaurant, Louis Pappas Riverside Café, where he would re-create this signature dish using fresh produce from his own ranch in Tarpon Springs.
Today, Louis Pappas's grandson continues his grandfather's old Florida family tradition at Pappas Ranch. There, he and his kitchen serve up a new menu of fresh seafood, poultry, sandwiches, street tacos, hand-cut steaks, and barbecue dishes whose "family flair" has been lauded by Metromix Tampa Bay. They continue to scoop savory housemade potato salad into their internationally renowned Louis Pappas Famous greek salad, tossing it in massive bowls that serve as many as four diners. Bartenders dole out glasses of locally brewed craft beers and wine or mix cocktails and martinis at the full center bar with flat-screen TVs.
The restaurant's decor channels that of the original Pappas family ranch. In the dining room, spacious booths are surrounded by rustic wooden walls, and outside is a covered outdoor patio.
While House of Brews prides itself on its beer selection, it also features a hearty, upscale food menu. Find yourself appetized after polishing off a plate of drunken cheesy bread topped with tomatoes, onions, garlic, black olives, and blue-cheese crumbles ($8.99). Move on to a fresh salad ($3.99–$7.99, add chicken for $2) or one of the friendly sandwiches ($4.99–$9.99), such as mom’s homemade chicken salad on multi-grain bread with melty provolone ($8.99). On tap, the House of Brews collection includes familiar domestics such as Miller Lite ($3) and Blue Moon ($5), as well as some more adventurous varieties, such as Sea Dog Blueberry Wheat Ale ($5) and heavier brews including Bell’s Two Hearted Ale ($7). The bottled beer assortment features 50 different domestics, microbrews, and imports, including the mighty 9.5% ABV Victory Golden Monkey ($6.50).
At Copperheads Tap House, beer aficionados and casual drinkers alike line up at the lengthy bar for frosty glasses of 30 craft beers. Local breweries such as Cigar City supply suds alongside internationally renowned brews as guests play pool, shoot darts, and watch sports on the flat-screen TVs above the bar. Out back, a sun-drenched patio welcomes imbibers as they soak in vitamin D and the tart orange and lemon flavors of an Ommegang Witte ale or the warm finish and Russian accent of a North Coast Old Rasputin stout. An event schedule chock-full of parties and concerts ensures that the spacious tavern is constantly humming with the sounds of weekly trivia, beer-sampling events, and live tunes from local bands.
MPC Models works to attract, manage, and prepare potential talent for the modeling world. A staff of knowledgeable photographers sets up in-studio photo-sessions for new models so that they might gain first-hand studio experience and develop signature styles and looks, aided by the support of make-up artists and wardrobe stylists. The shutterbugs also snap headshots, providing those in the corporate, realty, or acting world with relatable portraits to send to clients and agents, or to tape to their faces in the event of a bad hair day. Outside of its modeling forte, the studio also captures shots of families and pets during more low-key photo shoots.
Besides being a sports-bar and grill, Peabody’s Billiard and Games racks up good times in the triangle of pool tables, dartboards, and foosball. Of course, the 70 TVs and on-premises liquor store don’t hurt either. Periodic all-you-can-drink happy hours and other special events take place every week, offering table athletes of all stripes an arena for friendly competition. Patrons might square off in the weekly beer-pong rally, or pit their psychic skills against each other in the weekly poker tournaments. All the while, the kitchen bustles into the night, preparing late night items using only the freshest ingredients such as the Southern-style fried calamari and Peabody’s signature wings in one of nine sauces.
Certified personal trainer, Carrie Kukuda, pulls from her own weight-loss and exercise trials when coaching her students through kettlebell, boot-camp, or personal-training sessions. Her 45- to 60-minute boot-camp sessions motivate exercisers through kettlebell training, TRX resistance work, running, and yoga moves to tone muscles and jump-start heart rates. In addition to exercise, nutrition guidance leads patrons in slimming down with heart-healthy and energizing meals that eschew bacon-wrapped donuts stuffed in bacon-wrapped donuts. Throughout all programs, Carrie inspires participants to soldier on with endless positive motivation and fitness tips for all types of students.
