Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
We believe in teaching our clients how to do our exercise programs, as well as how their bodies work and how the exercises we are prescribing will help them achieve their fitness goals. We also combine a scientific approach with energetic instructors, upbeat music, and a community environment that keep our clients motivated.
What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?
When one woman first joined us, she couldn't look people in the eye and refused to work with a male trainer. Today, she is a new person: 60 pounds lighter, stronger, more confident, and completely comfortable with all our trainers. In her personal life, she also found the courage to make a major career change.
Do you run your gym according to a particular exercise philosophy?
At Empower, you will receive unparalleled personalized attention?even in our focused group classes?all while becoming a part of our supportive fitness community.
As Studio Hargett’s owner, Marideth Stiller helps customers get in shape by drawing on nearly two decades of fitness experience—including training in Pilates, yoga, and aquatic exercise. She didn’t waste time leaving her mark on the four-year-old studio, moving it to an expansive new location within the Pine State Creamery Building that gives her team of instructors room to spread out during their weekly Pilates, yoga, and cardio classes. Though these classes range from restorative yoga to ballet burn, they all offer a non-competitive environment in which students can improve their strength and flexibility to the point where they can use their own arms as a jump rope.
South African native Corne' Rutherford, the certified Pilates instructor who owns Pilates 4 Poise, teaches precise flowing movements that fortify the body's core region. Rutherford draws from more than a decade of experience to craft one-hour routines filled with time-tested muscle-isolation exercises developed by boxer, circus performer, and fitness innovator Joseph Pilates. Appropriate for all levels of strength and flexibility, classes incorporate deep-breathing exercises so that students can pump oxygen throughout their bodies and exhale pent-up giggles before they erupt mid-wedding vow. In addition to demonstrating the movements, Rutherford observes the group, sharing tips on form, technique, and alignment to promote safety and maximize the exercises' benefits.
A single horizontal barre is the only equipment at Barre Up, but it provides ample motivation and creativity for body-toning workouts. Students step up to the barre to perform a variety of small, isometric movements, designed to sculpt lean, dancer-like physiques. To ensure top-notch instruction at Barre Up, the class sizes are kept small and each teacher holds a BarreAmped certification in addition to Pilates or yoga certifications?each of which is taught at the studio. For instance, they also lead Buti yoga, a high-intensity combination of plyometrics, yoga, and tribal dance.
The recipe for Bikram yoga calls for 26 postures and two breathing exercises to be performed in a heated studio for 90 minutes. Cindy Glass and her team of yogis follow that recipe to a tee at Bikram Yoga Raleigh. The benefits of the warming workouts include everything from detoxification to increased circulation. Students who either have attended at least 20 classes or are related to Charlie Chaplin can sign up for one of the studio's advanced classes or 75-minute silent classes.
Studio Sculpt Pilates combines Pilates, barre, and modern kinesiology exercises to create full-body workouts. During the studio?s popular SculptBarre classes, high-energy music fills the room as students tone their muscles on the barre and Reformer. Private sessions are held for clients interested in one-on-one attention.
