Beaver Creek Vineyard's staff, helmed by grower Martin Pohl, cultivates grapes on more than 185 acres without artificial fertilizers or pesticides, and ferments them into certified organic wines free from commercial additives. The 2007 cabernet sauvignon traces its roots back to the hills of Horne Ranch in Lake County, where grapes grow in a blend of volcanic soil and mountain-valley loam, learning to sing Motown hits from their California Raisin cousins. After 14 months aging in 50% new American oak barrels, the biodynamic libation unleashes a taste bouquet featuring hints of tobacco, sweet oak, and cherries. Following Beaver Creek's USDA organic certification and Demeter Biodynamic certification, winemakers ferment their blends using only native yeasts, leave each barrel unfiltered, and prohibit robots with artificial intelligence from attending estate tastings.
For more than 40 years, the stratospheric surfers of Crazy Creek Air Adventures have ridden the waves of the wind, chauffeuring sky-struck passengers through celestial cloudscapes. Grab a fellow flyer, strap into a glider, and escape gravity's greedy grasp as a plane tows you up and off the runway. While passengers drink in incredible, fog-free views of the Mayacamas mountain range during the approximately 20-minute flight, an FAA-certified commercial pilot steers the craft through thermal currents, races paper planes, and harmonizes with cacophonous flocks of geese. Geothermal steam clouds rise from nearby geysers, rustic vineyards teem with sun-darkening grapes, and the remnants of an ancient volcano evoke an untamed primordial landscape, forming an unparalleled panoramic feast.
Lake County Chamber of Commerce not only represents an alliance of small businesses in the area, but works to build a "stronger economy and improved quality of life" for the residents and visitors of Lake County as a whole. To achieve this, they do what you'd expect a chamber of commerce to do: work with the community and volunteers to help promote community events, organize volunteer factions, and represent business interests at all government levels. Of course they also host mixers and other networking opportunities for local professionals in the community. They work with other community organizations to host numerous shindigs throughout the year, including the pear festival—which celebrates the production of one of the region's signature fruits with exhibits, a craft show, and a parade—and the Konocti Challenge, a cycling event held around a the largest lake in California. They also borrow a few traditions from other locales to further loosen neckties throughout the community. For instance, they take a page out of Europe's book and oversee an annual Oktoberfest that features beer tastings, live German music, dachshund races, dog and people costume contests, and arts and craft vendors, all in Historic Downtown Lakeport.
Healdsburg Golf Club carves through Wine Country, loping over undulating terrain marked by mature fir trees and views of Dry Creek Valley. Before taking the course, limber up on the all-weather driving range, with 18 stalls spread over three tiers that allow golfers to smack 300-yard drives or attempt to sink a two-story practice putt. The nine-hole course wraps well-manicured fairways around doglegs and surrounds greens with an entourage of bunkers and rolling mounds. Though suited for beginners, the course is a test for players of abilities, challenging golfers to hit a variety of shots, from long drives down par 5s to bicycle kicks past the goalkeeper on the eighth green. Golfers can relax after their rounds with a relaxing meal at the club’s bar and outdoor patio. The elevated patio overlooks the course as it fades into a sea of trees, misty mountains lining the horizon, and a wormhole leading to a secret nine-hole course on the moon.
