Harlan Hopchik, a USPTA-certified tennis instructor, is willing to work with just about anyone who has a racket in his or her hand: beginners through
advanced players, juniors through adults. Throughout the year, he travels around the Dallas area conducting private, semi-private, and group lessons that are geared toward not only improving skills, but also making the game more enjoyable. During sessions, students can tap into Harlan's wisdom and focus on any aspect of their repertoire?from improving their stroke technique and developing their match play tactics to learning how to trash-talk a particularly arrogant tennis-ball machine.
Within its massive stone façade, Lakes Tennis Academy contains 15,000 square feet of fitness facilities, complimented by 12 professionally lit, hard-surfaced tennis courts. Through classes and one-on-one sessions, trainers help students of all ages and levels improve tennis essentials, such as speed, accuracy, power, and control. The staff, which includes former NFL athletes and tennis pros who traded serves with the likes of Andre Agassi at Wimbledon, also teach general fitness courses such as boot camps, yoga, and personal training sessions.
The City of Cedar Hill Parks and Recreation Department is community centered. Every year, they organize the Cedar Hill 5K Green Run, which benefits the preservation of natural and open spaces.
This year, the
fun run traces a course through town that ends at the Village Green, where post-race entertainment gets going and awards are handed out. Proceeds from the event go to benefit the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center for educational programming, which provides
classes for kids where they
learn about ecology
through the lens of the canyon's eco-system and through the special learnin' goggles some children choose to wear.

Fitness is important, but so is not being bored. LoneStar Sports and Social Club aims to kill two birds with one stone in its coed athletic events for grown-ups. Teams assemble for friendly, competitive seasons of flag football, indoor soccer, kickball and dodgeball, tennis, bowling, and other events, working up a sweat and socializing at the same time. Sometimes things go beyond the simple formula of one team challenging another: organized events, such as the Clue Race Adventure, see teams of two doing battle with both their feet and their brains as they race around the city. Some, but not all, venues permit the consumption of a beer or two, and SCC organizers encourage attendance at post-victory (or loss) happy hours.
