Photography instructor J. Ambrozic started his career on the other end of the lens, working as a TV actor and Banana Republic model. The Renaissance man still appears on camera and works in talent management, but as a photographer, he's more interested in the faces of other people—and sometimes elephants. His diverse portfolio spans portraiture, landscapes, and action shots of animals. All of his images share a virtuosity that he unpacks for students during his DSLR classes. Teaching a mix of technical sophistication and composition techniques, he shows students how to snap captivating masterpieces of their own. Students can practice their new skills in Ambrozic's studio, a naturally lit oasis with crystalline views of the city skyline and the occasional giant lizard monster.
Spread across three stories and 110,000 square feet, the Cleveland State University Recreation Center enables students, faculty, and members of the community to tailor custom workouts and play a variety of sports. Weight rooms and cardio equipment help members form balanced workout regimens. Alternatively, athletes can hit the basketball, volleyball, or racquetball courts or take a dip in one of the Busbey Natatorium's two lap pools. Above the facilities, a 7,000-square-foot rooftop patio allows guests to cool off amid light foliage and a view of the campus.
Last year, CKIN helped more than 80,000 economically disadvantaged students receive school supplies in the greater Cleveland area. Teachers report that receiving the supplies increases students' motivation, creativity, and self-esteem, as the students can concentrate on their studies rather than worrying about having the necessary supplies to do their assignments. In order to continue to donate school supplies, CKIN relies on cash and product donations from individuals, as well as national manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of school and office supplies.
As memory cards replaced film reels, many photographers—both professional and amateur—felt befuddled by the new technology. That's where Digital Photo Academy stepped in. Since 2007, the business has facilitated workshops that explore all aspects of digital imagery, from operating cameras and uploading digital files to editing images and airbrushing realistic mustaches. Seasoned professionals lead the courses, helping understudies hone their use of light, framing, and timing. Students furnish their own cameras, and can tote along any ancillary equipment such as tripods, laptops, and flashes that relate to the course at hand.
Seeds of Literacy empowers adults to succeed in their communities through personal education and free GED preparation. Students work one-on-one with tutors who assist them with all subjects of the GED exam, which includes reading, writing, math, social studies, and science sections. New students of varying academic levels are accepted each week, and the program currently serves more than 1,000 students each year, with more than 250 volunteer tutors.
Janez Ambrozic popped out of his mother's womb with a camera in his hand. By the age of nine, he had built his own dark room and learned how to develop film. But rather than hide behind the camera, he stepped out and became the subject, filling his college years with modeling gigs for Banana Republic, J.Crew, and Abercrombie. This early success prompted a move to Los Angeles, where he pursued a career as a professional model and actor. While he was striking poses, he observed professional photographers and directors at work, and being in their company soon inspired him to return to his first love.
Today, Janez crafts bold images with masterful lighting techniques that he picked up from California's catwalks, soundstages, and Rembrandt impersonators. Though his skill has garnered the attention of magazines, he chooses the rugged path of the freelancer, which gives him the liberty to snap portraits, chronicle weddings, and concoct sultry boudoir photos at will. When he isn't practicing his trade, he teaches others the art of photography during workshops and private sessions.
