After dinner, Liquid undergoes a transformation. While diners are finishing up hearty pulled-pork sandwiches and fried pickles, a DJ steps into a booth. A switch is flipped, and multicolored lights shimmer across the low-lit interior as house music thunders from the speakers. The crowd goes wild.
Part restaurant, part bar, and part nightclub, Liquid spans three rooms, from a large dance floor to rows of tables and booths. Servers whisk bar-friendly eats to revelers until 1a.m., from spicy chicken wings to summer salads.
At the grills, the Liquid/Fresh Planet staff simmers up lean meats and veggies before assembling them into internationally inspired stuffed toasted pita and steaming rice bowls. Liquid/Fresh Planet strives to appeal to youngsters too, whipping up kid-friendly selections, such as cheese pizzas and PB&Js, and routinely checking beneath the stove for any potential boogeymen. Or follow the hum of whirring blenders through a forest of colorful red umbrellas to the Liquid/Fresh Planet front counter, where servers are busy folding fresh fruits and veggies into a variety of smoothies and wholesome eats. One packs a blender with organic oatmeal, fresh fruit, and whey protein, while another scoops up boosts from bottles of flaxseed, mixed vitamin, and ginseng.
As a typeface, the Helvetica font communicates with no flourishes; it's a bare-bones style where what you see is what you get. Striving for the same simplicity, Helvetica Juice Bar & Cafe, which is run by the same owner as the Latin-themed Burroco Grill, offers a culinary experience that comes off as similarly natural and elegant. Inside, rustic raw-wood tables, art installations, and exposed-brick walls welcome guests as they approach a chalkboard holding the café’s simple menu of sweets and savories, gourmet tacos, crepes, sandwiches, and Latin American–inspired dishes.
As cooks prepare guests’ orders, they work only with ripe fruits, fresh meats, and other ingredients that have never been canned, frozen, or preserved. Topping the list of sustenance is a selection of sweet crepes made with Nutella and ice cream, or studded with fruit and cookies. Savory options may include Latin-inspired eats, such as barbacoa tacos. The café’s signature smoothies boast bananas and mangos, and juice blends incorporate fruits from around the world, such as high-fiber curuba, vitamin-rich lulo, and Caribbean fruits such as maracuya, lulo, and guanabana, A BYOB establishment, customers often bring liquor to add to the juice drinks, turning them into specialty cocktails. As further show of the café’s conscientious offerings, Helvetica’s iced and hot coffee drinks are squeezed from direct-trade beans and served in biodegradable cups.
The red brick storefront of Murray Hill Market looks much the same as it did in 1922 when the building started out as a corner store where locals could stock up on snacks and sundries. Today, owner Michele Iacobelli Buckholtz brings that same type of old-fashioned hospitality to her market and sandwich counter, where you can munch on fresh sandwiches stacked with prime rib roast beef, fresh salmon, or the eatery's signature eggplant parmesan. The menu also features meat-free options for vegan and vegetarian diets, including chopped salads tossed with fresh veggies or portobello subs slathered with vegan mayo. You can also grab everyday items like fruit, laundry detergent, and Jeni's ice cream to make sure you never run out of the essentials you need to get through the season or just next week.
The North Union Farmers Market began in 1995 as a small market—back then, more than 500 hungry customers shopped the stalls of only six local farmers. Today, the market coordinates eight certified-producer farmers’ markets around Cleveland, allowing farmers to sell their products—from fresh, seasonal produce to meat, syrup, eggs, and dairy—directly to residents. The planet-friendly concept reduces the energy used for transportation and maximizes the freshness of the food.
