Even when she was swamped with a private psychotherapy practice and raising three kids, Bernadette Silva always found time for exercise. For the past 10 years, the certified personal trainer has studied boxing, yoga, and Pilates, ultimately developing her own workout style that fuses the aforementioned techniques with sports drills. In 2008, Silva and a group of local women spearheaded Neighborhood Workouts—the fitness program that would become Real Body Bootcamp.
Today, Silva and her team of certified personal trainers captain a gaggle of fitness classes throughout the week. Their signature boot camp fuses sports drills with high-intensity routines of cardio, strength training, yoga, and Pilates to offload calories, bolster cores, and build more endurance. The class list also includes Zumba and Piloxing fitness classes as well as kids' fitness classes, during which youngsters build self-confidence and the strength to finally confront the lunch ladies who take their money every day.
Clifton Yoga Center focuses on the Kripalu yoga tradition—a form of Hatha yoga that asks its practitioners to rely on inner focus, meditation, standard yoga poses, and breathing exercises. Classes are taught by a certified Kripalu yoga instructor with 18 years of experience in the discipline.
A native of Northern Ireland, Fedelmia Mullan Davis started Irish dancing when she was five years old. With her graceful movements and a strong sense of rhythm, she went on to win three All-Ireland championships and five Ulster championships. Upon arrival in the U.S., Fedelmia and five other T.C.R.G.-certified instructors founded the Irish Dancing Teachers Association of North America in New York City. This organization blossomed to include more than 600 certified teachers and maintains ties to its parent body in Ireland. Fedelmia also founded the Davis Academy of Irish Dancing and has spent the past 45 years training students of all ages in the art of Irish dance. Over the years, her students—along with her daughters and grandchildren—have followed in her sprightly footsteps by competing at the championship level.
Like an enchanted glacial tunnel, The Salt Cavern’s sparkling white walls pulse with gauzy pinks and purples, as crystalline lanterns illuminate powdery tufts of salt covering the floor. But this fairy-tale ambiance belies the cavern’s meticulously calibrated atmosphere: highly concentrated saline aerosol regularly circulates throughout the chamber in an effort to soothe health ailments such as asthma, allergies, or psoriasis.
Owners William and Eva boast backgrounds in the medical industry, but grew disillusioned with chemical therapies after investigating the benefits of salt therapy, a practice that originated in Poland nearly 200 years ago. Now the duo invites clients to experience salt’s therapeutic and calming benefits in their softly lit chamber. In addition to the salt’s calming vapors, William and Eva offer deepened relaxation with yoga sessions) in the cave, and enforce a tranquil atmosphere in which clients can nap, meditate, or quietly impersonate the Morton’s Salt girl.
Before he founded New Motive Hypnosis, certified personal trainer and nutritional consultant Patrick J. Murray was in search of new ways to help his clients achieve their goals. Soon, he discovered the powers of hypnosis, quickly earning the certifications to become a hypnotist and sports mental-performance coach through the American Board of Hypnotherapy. Through tailored meditation sessions, Patrick now bypasses the conscious mind and taps into long-held behavioral patterns and belief systems, which are stored in the subconscious mind in a box labeled “Do Not Touch – MGMT.” Through this process, Patrick helps his clients transcend instilled habits and reach their personal goals, whether they're to quit smoking, relieve stress, lose weight, or improve their sports performance
